I cant find a section dedicated to food and cooking so hope this is a suitable category to post in....
As usual when I decide I'm going to make a recipe, I come across problems!!
I found a recipe in a copy of runners world: 'Crab and pine nut pasta'. It specify's 100g fresh or frozen white crab meat.
However on my trip to sainsburys for ingredients I couldnt find any in the fresh or frozen section. I could only find a tin of it, with the tinned tuna, but i know tins often arent the best for taste. I even asked the fishmonger there who didnt seem to know either.
So should I just use the tin, or try another supermarket on my travels, I have a waitrose and big tesco nearby.

You probably won't find a lot of fresh crab around at the moment as I think it's pretty much out of season - give it another couple of months and it should be better. I've never come across frozen crab, but then I can't say I've ever looked, so maybe one of the other supermarkets might be able to help.
Tinned crab does tend to be a bit bland and also rather watery - I've tried it a couple of times and I'm not keen. About the best pre-prepared crab I've tried is by a company called Seafood & Eat It (groan!) - Abel and Cole sell it but I don't know where else you can buy it, and it's certainly not cheap (£5 for a small tub of white crab meat).
Hopefully someone else will have some ideas for an alternative.Back after a very long break!0 -
thanks just checked ocado and they do the one you mentioned, seafood and eat it! will pop down there tomorrow. i'd rather make a recipe properly first time, i have often been disappointed by the results when using sub standard ingredients!0

Tesco had crab meat in shell reduced yesterday in my store (would'nt have noticed it in the fish fridge), so they sell it for sure.
Don't know the price it was reduced to £2.50???
How about posting the recipe, I'd like to give it a go please.

tried the recipe, overcooked the pasta a little. was ok but nothing special, dont think it made the most of the crab as there didnt seem to be a lot in the final plate. in terms of money saving not great:
- 300g tagliatelle 0.57p for 500g, say 40p
- 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil storecupboard ingredient....
- 200g tenderstem broccoli 45p
- 2 cloves chopped garlic say 10p whole garlic 25p
- 3 diced tomatoes 1.65 for 6 so, 82p
-100g fresh or frozen white crab meat £4.89
- grated zest and juice of half a lemon 30p
- small bunch of finely chopped basil leaves 79p
- pine nuts 2.05 a pack say a 1/8 so 25p
£8.83 for 2 people, £4.41 per person0 -
