Venue in receivership?

Hi All,

Just wanted to pick your collective brain! I've heard today that there is a rumor our reception venue may be in receivership. This was through a friend's sister in law who lives nearby to the venue. Anyways OH called them today and got a snotty response saying no they're not and asked who had told us. Now if they are not then I can understand the snotty attitude but I'm a bit nervous that the snotty response could be hiding something. So I checked the Companies House web-site and they are listed as Active but their registered address is an Accountants. I don't understand the whole receivership/going bust thing and wondered if its registered to an accountants if that's a warning sign??

So my question to you lovely people is can I double check any other way? Or should I be happy that they have said no and Companies House are showing Active?

thanks!

Jem

(PS. We have only paid them £230 so far and think we have a back up venue. We also have wedding insurance through Confetti. And the wedding is 7 months away, so if it does go belly up we shouldn't lose too much and we do have time to re-arrange)

i'm not sure, but i would say that if their address is showing as an accountants then they probably are in receivership, i hope i'm wrong though, not sure how you would check? unless you ring the accountant listed?

Many companies have their address as accountants for the purpose of sending in accounts. If they are in receivership, you will be informed by the official receiver.

What about phoning and pretending your looking for somewhere to hold your wedding next year and see what they say?

    Search the insolvency register:

    http://www.insolvency.gov.uk/eiir/

Having a registered office as an accountants is not a concern, quite a few small business do this.

Just means that the accountant will deal with Annual Returns, filing of accounts, and any other forms that need sending to Companies House on behalf of their client.

Accountants are often used as the registered address, especially when an owner doesn't want their home address in the public domain. It's very common and nothing to worry about.
The snooty response was probably because a rumour like that getting out can cost them a lot of business.
You have wedding insurance, you've had no scary paperwork from the venue and the wedding is quite a while away so I'd try not to worry.

    Thanks Everyone

I've checked the insolvency register above and they are not on there. :D

To be honest I wasn't too worried, after the bad luck we've been having this year it wouldn't surprise me if they were going bust though! The only thing that bothered me was that booking at the second venue would have added a couple of grand onto the wedding! At the end of the day though there's ways round that and the ceremony is at a different place so we could still have got married!

    Thanks again

That won't tell you anything either. If a business thinks it is in financial trouble, it is going to continue trading to try and trade themselves out of the problem. They are not going to turn business away until the actual minute they go into Administration

There is no way you can find out unless you know somebody inside the company who is willing to breach confidentiality. Even then. only the Directors are going to know of any problems, the staff won't be aware until the minute Administrators walk through the door, or the Directors tell them to go home
