A very interesting read and this will, undoubtedly, be seized on by the Tories. I guess it goes to show how little difference there is between the main parties on the economic need for cuts the issue is how they achieve them with Labour being more distributionist in its approach.
I do see a whole heap of trouble with the Public Sector coming up especially when they go after their pensions, as they need to.
Presumably Darling thinks he has nothing to lose. The more 'honest' he appears, the more difficult it would be for Brown to sack him in the unlikely event that they won. Besides, he has only been Chancellor since 2007 a few months before the credit crunch started. Even if Labour lose, he can arguably claim that he made a decent fist of the mother of all bad hands.US housing: it's not a bubble
Moneyweek, December 20050 -
Wow - just seen the corresponding news report for this story on the 10 o'clock news. Some footage of AD from 1961 (I think)!0

Now it's been a major report on the news....this has gotta blow up, big style!0

It'll be interesting to see what this does to the polls. I heard it somewhere that 2/3s of those polled thought that 'efficiency savings' would be enough to deal with the deficit! hopefully they'll wake up now and smell the coffee... it's going to be pretty grim whoever wins.“I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.” - P.G. May I say, rather pleasant thread too!!0

Ahem!!!! Point of order Mr amcluesent, it was not the the socialists who spent everyones money though was it??? It was without a doubt the capitalists, the bankers, they are the ones who ran up the huge debts, so for you too blame the socialists is pure deluded insanity. Have you not seen the the finiancial news over the last few years, these are not the debts of socialism rather the debts of capitalism. Had we been a socialist society we would not be in this mess!!! So ha bloody har you are wrong, there is no room for speculative capitalism in a socialist society, so if we were socialists we would not have this debt. Prepared to admit your are wrong?
It was the capitalists that created the money (admitedly in an unsustainable manner) that the socialists have spent, in an even more unsustainable manner. The reason we are having to borrow so much over a sustained period of time is the massive structural deficit that reckless spending by this government has created. The country has been run by socialists for the past 13 years and like every previous labour government it has run out of money and been the pre-cursor for massive austerity measures and rising poverty.0 -
We must rid this country of the evils of leftism to solve the deficit!
Start by abolishing the benefits budget and doubling the police budget to compensate for any uprising of the idle and vagrants.
Then stop the pointless rebuilding of perfectly good hospitals and schools and other crazy leftist initiatives0 -
I couldn't believe my eyes when i read his answer.
At least he is sometimes honest. He also said a few years back the recession would be very tough. No doubt brown the clown will have a right go at him now.
The country is a mess. Something we all knew. Although certain bulls on here failed to admit to it.....how stubborn of them.
Massive, huge cuts to come. The real pain hasn't even begun yet.
The sooner these cuts come the better. Its time to face up to boom years based on debt. Hopefully people will learn their lesson.0 -
Whilst Darling may be a realist and being honest in this interview about the 'Thatcher style cuts', why no mention in the Budget or in the backing documents?
If Darling wants to make some cuts, may I suggest he starts with the advertising budget. It seems that every other advert on TV at the moment is for stopping smoking, drink driving, becoming a teacher, becoming a social worker, joining the Army, etc.
I even noticed during CSI Las Vegas on Five this week that it is 'sponsored' by HMRC! A show involving picking over dead corpses and HMRC. A match made in heaven. But why are the taxpayers sponsoring a TV show?Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.0
