How are arrears calculated for unemployed?

Just curious because my wife has an ex partner who pays only £5 per week for his 2 children, which in my opinion is a joke.
Anyway, my questions are how are arrears calculated for unemployed people if they can only base it on £5? What happens in the background? Do the arrears eventually have to be paid and in what formula do CSA use to work this out? What happens if the NRP never obtains a full time job?
Apologies for a lot of questions,

the assessment for someone unemployed is £5 per week, if they pay that there is no arrears, if they don't then the arrears are £5 per week. It is a low amount but if a couple were still together and one became unemployed then things would need to be cut back.0

What a ridiculous system! I am amazed the CSA / Government can say in one breath £5 is enough to look after 2 kids yet in another breath fleece the working!
Thanks Caz.0 -
They're not saying that £5 is enough, its just all they can take when the NRP is not earning a wage.
My friend gets less than that as her ex is not earning and has 8+ children!! I think she gets about 2.50 every fortnight and her kids are 11 and 13...Be who you are, say what you feel, those who mind don't matter, those who matter don't mind. They say that talking to yourself is a sign of mental illness. I don't know how much jsa currently is but i think its less than £70 a week, so your partners ex will have £5 taken off this and the rest will have to pay his bills and food so not as if he's living it up while the kids are going without, she will just have to hope he manages to find a job fairly quickly and be careful with her money until then0

I agree, its a small amount but come on! What is the unemployed person supposed to pay? Should your maintanence build up while you are not working?? What if your on the dole for 4,5 years or more?
When you resume work should you have to pay for those "missing" years? At what rate?? Its hard enough as it is for some of us NRP`s without having to face a LIFETIME of paying back, although, under this government dont be surprised if that comes into law!0 -

But we know for a fact he works on the side and lives a more lavish lifestyle than working people!
Why should my wife be careful with her money? As a NRP who works and pays £340 per month for his 2 kids, the CSA do not take into consideration my living costs!
My wife has to work 2 jobs to keep her kids fed and clothed while her lazy, waster of an ex flaunts it by going to concerts etc & working cash in hand etc.
If we all had a fairer system, these forums wouldnt exist, but until we do then the hard working person will never agree to being publicly fleeced by these so called do gooders!0 -

Yes the unemployed should amass arrears just as employed people do. Why is there such protection for those that just want to sit on their back sides, populating the community and sponging off the tax payer?
The honest hard working people in this land do not get nothing from this country or poxy government.
Now I accept that a small minority of people lose their jobs due to ill health or circumstances but the majority see it as a free ride.
Lots of these people know how to fiddle the system in their favour and never accept responsibility for impregnating a woman.
£5 for 2 kids dont buy sod all!0 -

I know you are frustrated at the system and so are we all as i get fleeced plenty because of a scheming "PARENT WITH CARE" who takes everything that is going.
A lot of people in this economic climate don't have jobs through no fault of their own and if they are assesed at £5 pw then so be it .How on earth can they be accountable for arrears when they eventually get a new job0 -
If you believe the NRP to be working then you can report them to the benefits fraud hotline. If you want to ensure that your wife gets the £5 a week (and some of us ONLY get that despite the NRP working.......) then you can ask the CSA to deduct the amount at source from his benefits.
As frustrated as you are tat the system the above is all you can do.Free/impartial debt advice: Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) | National Debtline | Find your local CAB0 -

Don't you help your wife to keep her kids fed and clothed?
Incidentally, I agree that there are many wasters out there, but there are also many NRPs who deliberately do not pay anything towards their children. It took four years for my ex to start paying for our three children, and then only because it is taken out of his wages. He hasn't spoken to me since.
So yes, there are problems with the system, just as there are problems with human nature - some people are happy to pay for their children, others are not; some PWCs are out to get everything they can from their ex, others are happy to get anything. Unfortunately, I can't think of a way that would be completely fair to all NRPs and all PWCs, and I doubt if there is one.0
