LCD TV price war

Browsing in my local "used to be Dixons," I noticed a 15" lcd tv for £149. This is a response, apparently, to one being offered by Comet for a similar price. Hopefully this kind of competition will soon extend to the larger sizes. There are no doubt similar internet deals, but this is a real shop, walk out with it under your arm, take it back if it doesn't work, etc.

Have you ever tried taking something back to Currys ?

Shopping online gives you more protection than in the high street. :D

LOL I would not agree entirely, but Currys is a particularly difficult place to take stuff back to, that is for sure ;)

    Drifting off topic.......

To be honest ive never had a problem returning gear to Curry's infact the last time I did have to return something to them (hi-fi) I ended up with a replacement a pack of re-writables and some oxygen filled lead which ive never used, god know what its all about?

OK OK back on topic, noticed the latest argos has a £150 15" tv as well.

However seeing as 19" PC monitors, with above HD resolution are available generally for around £120-130 at the moment, I think we should see somewhat more of a reduction very soon as the manufacturers and retailers are still charging a premium on actual TVs

Premium on TVs is actually due to EU taxation - taxation levels on imported TVs (and most LCDs are manufactured outwith the EU) are very high compared with "computer monitors" - however I also believe that they were (or have already ?) going to change the rules so anything with a DVI socket was classed as a TV ....

Intriguing - never realised that. Apparently it's 14% right? I still think that means we should see about £160 19" TVs, no?

I guess you take the LCD Panel price, add costs for a tv tuner, remote control, SCARt inputs etc - maybe this lot ads £50 to the base costs of about £130 for a generic 19" TFT - then add 14% - you get over the £200 mark... even more for a 'brand'

I bought a 19" Samsung HD Ready TFT TV in PCWORLD about 8 months ago for £250 ...

    not that far off ?

You can get a 17" TV from PC world for £149 or a 19" widescreen for £169

I see where you're coming from but I'd put the extras at a tenner absolute max. Still amazed at teh import tax though, imagine how little the £50 tellys must cost to make!
