Icing... how far in advance?

I'm making a cake for my OH's birthday on Friday, but it's quite complicated and it's going to take me a long time to do. Because I'm not going to have a lot of time on Friday to do it before we go out I want to start making some of it possibly today but definately tomorrow. Here's a few pictures that I'm using for inspiration...

It's going to be two-tiered, the tiers will be covered in sky blue, with green hills as a background. This will be done on Friday, but I'm planning on making little figures out of coloured ready-to-roll icing to stand around the base, like in the pictures. If I made some today and kept them in an airtight container, would they dry out and go funny or would they keep ok? Thanks in advance for any advice!

I think they would be fine, I remember my mum made me a cake with bears made out of roll on icing and she did those in advance.

    Hi there
I make Cakes as a hobby and i have made a mario brothers cake similiar to the ones you want for my sons 6th bday.
I made my figures out of modelling paste because it sets hard and firm and will not give under weight.
The ones stuck to the cake where just made out of regular sugarpaste.
Let me know if i can help anymore.
