thougth i would add this in to this thread
http://www.visitscotland.com - on here, several hotels and B&Bs still availible from £45 pppn - outside city can be as low as £22 pppn - tattoo tickets have all been sold but there is loads more to do.
http://www.edfringe.com - all about the Edinburgh fringe
http://www.edfringe.com/maps/html/venuelist.html - this is the venue list for the fringe shows
http://www.thetrainline.com - cheapest way to book train tickets for travel up or down to Edinburgh
if you do come here for the festiful, then you have a choice of travel and cheap aswell.
http://www.lothianbuses.co.uk - all the buses in the city centre are £1 each way or £2.30 per day for a day ticket. Now, a day ticket means you can jump on as many buses, no matter for how long, for that one price - so if you are getting 3 buses, that would cost £3 but you pay £2.30 so you save 70p.... even more if you get more than 3 buses.... but you pay on board the 1st bus you jump on and you have to show the ticket to each driver that you board their bus - NB this ticket will only work on LRT buses and will not work on first buses.
http://www.firstedinburgh.co.uk - secondry bus service in Edinburgh - they run from Edinburgh to Livingston and the outskirts of the city.
You can also drive, cycle but by far, the easiest way to get around the city, is to walk. the entire city centre is only approx 2 square miles - but this is Princess Street (main street), High Street (fringe ativity on here - road is closed becasue of all this) Castle Terrace - leading up to the castle and also the frindge
Take note, that there are also Firework dysplays on Saturday 5th, 12th and 19th 26th August (all 10:30PM).
http://www.edinburgh-tattoo.co.uk/tickets/performance_dates_times.html
If you are going to the fringe / tattoo, festiful, i am 100% possitive you will enjoy it here - the atmosphere is amazing! and i LIVE here!
Would also like to thank martin for adding this to the newsletterNever do things tomorow when you can do them today.0 -

Edinburgh International Festival
Edinburgh Festivals 2006
Bank of Scotland Fireworks Concert
The grand finale to the Edinburgh International Festival is the Bank of Scotland Fireworks Concert, performed by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra on Sunday 3rd September at 9pm. This spectacular firework display can be seen from many vantage points about the city0 -
Can I ask how you came up with this list? Was it a search on the fringe site?
I'm asking because it would be useful to have the same list, but linked to show descriptions.0 -
There are a number of shows (most of them according to the Fringe website) on the 6th and 7th of August which are 2 for the price of 1.
See here for details

Just to expand on McLarens excellent links to getting about in Edinburgh.
The primary bus service LOTHIAN Bus is normally coloured Red, Maroon or White with some red or maroon flashing on the bus. You will also find most buses go across the city centre.
If you are not staying in Edinburgh but in one of the towns nearby, you will find that Lothian Bus will take you to towns such as Penicuik, Dalkeith, Prestonpans, Musselburgh, Port Seton (Seton Sands Holiday Park) - in general most places in East or Midlothian which are near to Edinburgh.
These places can also be reached on the £2.30 day ticket.
If you are staying for a few weeks its worth considering getting a monthly pass (Ridacard) if you would be travelling a lot by bus.
Car Park and Ride at Ingliston on A8 near the Airport
Car Park and Ride at Hermiston on A71
Use First Bus if you want late evening travel to these towns or to West Lothian (eg Livingston) or Fife (Burntisland, Kirkaldy, Dunfermline etc).
I think they also do a day ticket as well as multi trip tickets but as I don't use them often someone might want to pick me up on that if wrong.
Night Bus is also available across Edinburgh and to many of the places nearby - it isn't covered by the Lothian Bus day ticket but is still good value (£2 or £1 with a Ridacard) and fairly frequent considering that it is an overnight service.
http://www.nightbuses.com/
Or train is a good bet, particularly from West Lothian, Fife or East Lothian or to a lesser extent within Edinburgh (handy enough if close to a station otherwise bus would be better). If you are not travelling to Midlothian there are no train services.
You can travel by train within Edinburgh on the west side from the following -
Edinburgh Park
Gyle
Wester Hailes
Kingsknowe
Slateford
Just out of West Edinburgh (within 20 miles or so) are -
Curriehill (park and ride)
Kirknewton
Livingston South
Livingston North
Linlithgow
Fife Stations eg Aberdour, Inverkeithing and more
On the East side of Edinburgh -
Newcraighall (park and ride just off the A1)
Brunstane
Those are around 10 mins from Edinburgh Waverly (city centre)
Also on East side is the line running to North Berwick (East Lothian) which goes through Musselburgh, Wallyford, Prestonpans, Longniddry.
Taxis are expensive and you will probably pay more for using an Edinburgh taxi if going to an area outside city limits than you would in making the journey into Edinburgh using a Mid or East Lothian taxi for example.
There are a number of private hire cars too in Edinburgh so you can always try calling these if you need picked up somewhere and can't get a Hackney type cab. Used to be possible to go into one of these private hire's office too in the Grassmarket part of the city to get a car (just sit and wait in the office), but I haven't been out in that part of town for ages so not sure if its still there).
City centre is fairly walkable if hilly in places and if you have a bike with you, it has a combination of cycle lanes, areas of the road shared with buses and cycle lanes that are part of footpaths or shared with pedestrians (don't cycle on the pavement if it isn't marked as ok to cycle on).
Some nice areas where you can cycle away from cars in and around Edinburgh - you can use a combination of these and cycle lanes on the road to commute around.
I wouldn't advocate cycling on the road with children though as its just too busy anywhere near the city centre or on main routes into the city.0 -
There are also lots of previews for £5 on 2nd, 3rd, 4th (and 5th?) of August.
Apparently if you hang around the Royla Mile or Pleasance Courtyard in the first few days you might be offered free tickets.
Also sign up to the mailing lists of the venues - got 4 free tickets for Tim Minchin last night via the Gilded Balloon mailing list which would have cost £50 during the main fringe run (£12.50 each) and the show was excellent!"The happiest of people don't necessarily have the
best of everything; they just make the best
of everything that comes along their way."

Free tickets in today's (and yesterdays) Scotsman newspaper for many of the shows at the Assembly Rooms - by phoning Assembly Rooms box office (mention free Scotsman tickets) and by coupon (in the paper) to take to the box office."The happiest of people don't necessarily have the
best of everything; they just make the best
of everything that comes along their way."
