The Price Of Dentures

  • As usual when I need information about something the MSE board comes to my rescue!

I have health problems that can make my saliva acidic and my teeth decay upwards from the bottom up and now every bottom tooth is filled (as are many of my top teeth). I see my dentist at least every three months, although quite often I don't make three months without having a problem!

I went to the dentist the other week because one of my molars broke off at gum level. The missing tooth is between the last molar (heavily filled) and a tooth crowned about 2 years ago.

The options my dentist gave me were a bridge at a cost of £700 and not available on the NHS, a crown or a denture both £198 on the NHS. The bridge is out of the question because of the cost, so I am looking at a crown or a denture.

To be honest at the time I really didn't want a denture and I was fixed on having a crown. My dentist wasn't really keen on doing a crown because it would require a post and this type of crown can have a short life. However, after some x-rays my dentist said she would be willing to do the crown, but she would make it lower than the two teeth either side of it to reduce the chance of it being damaged.

So that's what I opted for and booked another appointment to start treatment. Unfortunately the dentist was ill and the appointment was rearranged for 27th.

The problem is that now that I have been living for a few weeks with the gap, I've realised that biting down on either of the two molars around the gap is painful and jarring. So my dentist's plan of making the new crown lower than these two teeth isn't going to work.

I have been rethinking the idea of a partial denture which is how I ended up here.

I've been trying to find a photo of a single molar denture, but can't find one.

How successful do you think a single molar as a would denture be?

Does a denture always have to clip on to other teeth? Should I be thinking about having the other two teeth removed and added to the denture too? The problem is the tooth next to the crown is filled at the back and front and looking dodgy. Maybe I should ask about having a complete set of dentures for my bottom teeth now and save myself a lot of trouble and money in the long term, especially as I will only ever be able to afford NHS treatment (unless I win the lottery!:p).

    I would welcome any advice.

    Thanks

  • hi guys im also asking for advice too if anyone knows..
my front 6 teeth are badly crossed stick out and not good,
i would like to have something done but i dont know what my options are.
i only have a small amount of bone in my gum as they have gone over the years i know i could have a bone graft but its far too costly so thats ruled out.
i hate my teeth and really want something done with them as they are all a little loose and ugly the front 6 so even capping them isnt an option because of them being slightly loose what options have i got here and roughly at what cost i do have an nhs dentist but she is not interested when i have mentioned this?
    any ideas??
always send a smile as it costs nothing..

Those last two questions are far too specific to be able to advise on without examining the patient.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Shall I send you a photo? :rotfl:

    Only joking!;)

Seriously though, I love my dentist as she is very caring to her patients, but I think her approach is to save the natural tooth if at all possible and I'm not sure whether to keep going along with her.

Is a crown with post in the natural root generally more robust than a denture when it comes to eating?

Again, it depends on which tooth, it's state in the first place, what it bites against and how hard the bite is.

    Too many variables!!!

And even photos don't show everything that needs to be checked.

Thank you, I do understand. ;)

I think when I get there next week I'll have to speak to my dentist and see what she thinks.

Can somebody tell me how long it takes till the extractions stop hurting?
The three extractions were done last Friday and the denture (six at the front, from left lateral incisor to first right premolar) is fine but it is still (on Tuesday) so sensitive I cannot chew using those teeth, much less bite. I have to cut things like apples up small and put them into the back of my mouth!

i think mine took about a week to stop hurting so much- dont try eating stuff that takes too much effort, as it willhurt even more!

On the upside, not being able to eat anything properly for the first few weeks left me nearly a stone lighter...!

i ate mashed potato, a slice of toast took 15 minutes to eat, crumpets were good cos they didnt require too much effort, soup (but not too hot), a lot of tea (through a straw for the first few days!!). Crisps like quavers or skips as well cos you can melt them with your tongue. As time went on and it became less painful, I was able to add more food to the list of things I could eat.

It does get better, I promise! I had mine done 2 months ago, and while there are still certain foods that I struggle with, I am managing perfectly fine now :-)
