1997 vs 2010

I've just seen quite an interesting little pressie on BBC News 24 comparing 1997 to 2010.

Some interesting points:

Average house price

1997: ~£55k
2010: ~£161k

Personal Debt
1997: £400BILLION
2010: £1.2TRILLION

NHS Spending
1997: ~£38BN
2010: ~£120BN

(I might be slightly wrong on the NHS Spending costs & personal debt figures as the figures came and went in a flash but the ballpark is right).

I find it quite amazing that personal debt has trebled, virtually in line with the increase in house prices. The question is, have incomes grown to the same extent?

On NHS spending, have we really seen the improvement that ought to be evident from a threefold increase in spending? Hmmmmm

Two points 1995 was bottom of last crash and if it's total dept I would have thought it had some effect.

I searched for old average wages quite a few times and never been able to find them does anyone have a link

A fairer comparison would be mid 1989 to mid 2007, as the previous peaks (give or take 3 months) as a taster of what my happen.

Not to worry. Current prices are totally affordable and not at all overpriced. They were just really cheap in 1997.
