Co-op considering account!

I finally rang the Co-op for a cashminder account. First question asked was if and when id been bankrupt, told them discharged in Nov 09. Going through the application and knew it wasnt going to be good news when they mentioned credit reference agencies. The final word was the application needs to go for further consideration and this takes up to 4 days. She did throw a random question in at the end asking if pay tax! I said ofc.

I thought they didnt check credit agencies? The lady told me all about the cashminder, how no lending facilites etc. Ive read a few posts where people are turned down via post from co-op, and none that have been accepted.
Anyone got any good things to say here? :rotfl:

I rang coop last week to try to get an account, I got bumped around departments a bit as I seemed to be confusing the people on the other end of the telephone what with being a bankrupt and all. They asked me to go into my local branch with my passport in the end and I filled out the form there. I gave them a call today as I had not seen anything in the post and was worrying I had been turned down (really did not want to have to try Barclays, they were a major creditor) but they have reassured me that my application has been accepted and I should get something in the post soon. :j

I am really pleased, I was very worried I would end up without an account all together, but now I have a shiny new bank account and feel a bit more like a normal person and less like a financial leper having to ring my bell in public all the time.

Cheers for that mate. I was so expecting bad news i couldnt wait untill i got the letter to post it here. Barclays was also a major creditor for me, so ive ruled those out anyway. Ill just hope for some good news and post here when i know.

It seems that in todays budget it was announced that banks HAVE to offer everyone a basic bank account by law, still should hopefully include anyone who is BR so it might be that anyone who is going BR soon may be able to keep their basic account, or at least open another one, anywhere. there should be more details tonight
  • I had no problem opening my coop cashminder and I told them I was going Br, it only took 4 days b4 I got the account number etc. All they asked me for was my passport and whenever Ive needed to ring them they have been really helpful so am not sure why they suddenly have changed for you

    Hi,

Well.... I went BR monday morning, on monday afternoon i rang co-op and applied for a cashminder account - told them all about the bankruptcy etc.

In less than 10 minutes everything was done, account had been approved and they told me to expect the paperwork within 4 days.

Much easier and less painful than i had been anticipating.

Not sure why others have had problems?, i believed that as long as you are on the electoral roll then there shouldn't be any issue with opening an account?
