Have you not heard of identity theft...being a family member would be the easiest....if easiest is the right word....0
-
of course i have, it seems like no one is taking any precautions, no checks etc... from the information they had they could not have proved this person existed, the DOB, name did not match with and address and email, so how do do thier checks?0
-
but you said the dob was the same...."just with my g/f's name and DOB"...also you can have a delivery address which is different to home address...cant understand what you mean re' bank details........0
-
well the name and DOB is correct, but this is surley not enough to confirm the actual identity of a prerson (two random people could have teh same name and DOB)
i would have thought that a company would have to confirm that someone is legit by making sure name, dob, address and other details match up by way of proof (bills etc)??
i thought that many places required the billing address to be the same as the contract holder to confirm they have the correct person, delivery address is usually a seperate field/peice of information is it not? like the 'address if different from billing address' on online forms?
just seems the company have given a contract to someone without cheching thier details add up.0 -
I don't and you probably don't know how she committed this offence/s......but the one who is in the wrong here is the perpetrator....and by not reporting it yr gf is effectively enabling her to commit offences in the future....It must be hard when it is family however sometimes you have to overcome that and do what is right.....0

Whilst it's not common this I have seen more than one person that has had the exact same thing happen to them. Usually a bit of post has been intercepted or something and normally there is more than one account set up.
The only way to stop this happening again is by reporting it, this will result in a CIFAS marker being raised which will get the bank's making more in depth checks if they receive an application in your gf's name.
It's a really tricky situation and we don't know the whole story obviously but I would be surprised if there were not more accounts on the go.Happily an ex mortgage broker!0 -
this is the thing, obviously we're going to try and get this cleared, etc but being human nature to employ some damage limitation it may well be the case that thre are more things around the corner, and if they dont come out now they will at some point and that could result in not being able to afford a higher mortgage rate, im not prepared to be, or let the gf be ruled by that forever.
one thing... is there any way we can do a proper check to see what IS out there?
like i say experian did not have this on th record 6 months back but there must be some way of doing this..... otherwise lenders wouldnt know about things like this when tehy do thier checks???

don't forget equifax also, and are the searches picking up previous addresses?
there will be other ways but they won't be available to mere mortal such as us, only the authorities unfortunately.Happily an ex mortgage broker!0 -
yeh the experian has picked up both of her sisters previous addresses which we are now trying to get cleared but they dont show anything adverse as far as payments, contracts etc, its just the addresses.
i'll try equifax.
if we got a credit check done for a loan or something (knowing it was going to come back bad) could we request all the details of the how's and why's s we can then investigate?0 -
they are only required to tell you the source of the information that affected their decision, not what the information is and they are likely to just give you experian or equifax' address.
I would think the only way to find exactly what has been taken out would be via the police or something.Happily an ex mortgage broker!0
