Cleaning florescent jacket?

My oh has just given me his flurescent yellow padded jacket for cleaning. He's a lorry driver and it's covered in oil and grime - I've washed it once with my normal detergent but the oil and grime hasn't shifted. Anyone got any ideas what I could try - he's only had it about 8 weeks and as he delivers food to cafe's and hotels etc it doesn't give a good impression!

Dont know if this will help my OH is a mechanic so his clothes are always covered in oil. But when oil sometimes gets on the carpets petrol will get it out - if you rubbed petrol on his jacket it might get the oil out but you would have to get rid of the smell!0

I have the same problem with DH's jacket too and have soaked it in a bucket of cola that I have boiled and left it overnight and then washed the next day. It has got a lot out but not allBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Thanks everyone - I was hoping for something simpler, the jacket is really thick nylon with a navy blue quilted interior? The oil and grime seems really ingrained into the flurescent yellow front?

You could try smearing the greasy bits with washing up liquid, rub it in and wash as hot as you can (I do this for fat spots). Then anything thats left you could try a bit of Cif and a good scrub with a nail brush. Not very enviromentally friendly but neithers the greaseAs my dad always used to say 'Just because you've got the money doesn't mean to say you have to spend it all at once'0

How about making a paste up with Biological Washing Powder or Dishwashing powder & giving it a good scrub with a nailbrush? Or maybe something like Swarfega?
If you'd got to it before washing it, talcum powder can be used (sprinkled on & left overnight) to absorb the oil/grease, before brushing it off, scrubbing it & then washing it!
Try it on a patch that doesn't show first - any of the above can bleach the fabric. :j:D:beer::eek::A:p:rotfl::cool::):(:T0 -
Can your husband get hold of the lorry wash that cleans the grime/traffic fillm off lorries? If so you could try soaking it in that first. With our hi-viz' we wash them weekly its the only way to keep the grime at bay.0

If it's Personal Protective Equipment then cleaning it is the employer's responsibility. There are contractors who will do it and guarantee not to damage the reflective strips.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0

I clean my husbands reflective jacket every 2 weeks first i lay it out and scrub the bad stains with bio liqued ( asda smartprice one) then wipe off as much as possible put it into the machine at 40deg wash, getting it dry at this time of year is the worst bit, hope this helps:)0

Thanks everyone, my oh only has the one jacket and as he only has one day off each week it can be a problem getting him to bring the jacket home on his days off - thats why it's so disgusting! I will give them all a try
Thanks
