Adding 17yr old learner to car insurance

My 17yr old daughter is going to start lessons in the next week or two and I was looking at adding her to my car insurance like I was added to my Dad's many years ago and just going out with me to practice when she fancies. However, my insurers told me they only do a 'Learner scheme' where she is insured for 30 days for £55 for a maximum of 5 times a year with at least one week in between monthly sessions.
Now if she only goes out with me once a week, it will cost me £55 for 4 practice sessions!!! Maybe this is how it is all done now, as I am sure they don't want young drivers!!
So does anyone have any recommendations for alternative insurers which offer 'full time' insurance not a month at a time max 5 mths in a year! By the way I am with Allianz.
Thanks you all :A

Sorry I can't help but that sounds strange to say the least. Back in the day when I was 17 (10+ years ago) I was on my dads insurance without any problems. If I was you I'd phone around and maybe try Abbey or Endsleigh.
I used to work in the insurance industry a few years ago and have never come across this 'learner scheme'. In fact it is prohibitive in the sense that your daughter is pretty much restricted to paying for lessons as the costs for private driving with you would be far too high. The costs as I see it would be £275 on top of your premium for 6 months coverage but only 5 months actual driving time.0 -
Never heard of that either. A friend of mine is in the same position and we're waiting to see how much it will cost to put his daughter onto his insurance, but it won't be cheap.Norn Iron Club Member No. 252 :beer:0

Not an issue for me for about another 18 months, but I'd be interested to find out if this is the norm. I hope not!
Just remembered it cost me £17 for a year's insurance on my mum's car in 1989. Fully comp too.0 -
I just put my son on until my current insurance expires on April 7th and it cost me £22.00 for 3 weeks and I already have a 19 + 21 year old boy on. Ring around and maybe change companies. Once they pass their test though it becomes more expensive.0

My daughter was 17 in December.I started a thread on here around that time to get some advice about insurance and lessons etc.
Someone suggested Collingwood insurance at the time, and thats who we went with....
http://www.collingwoodlearners.co.uk/
The policy allowed her to drive her grandmothers 10 year old KA.
My husband organised it so I'm not sure of price ( I THINK it was around £400 for just under 3 months....???) I'm not even sure whether it was 'good value', but since my car is too big and new(ish) and my husbands car is automatic, it was the only option available at the time.
I checked a price comparrison site last night to get a feel for insurance for her once she passes her test - to be taken very soon!!! The average quote was around £1000...with Quinn Direct offering the 'best' deal.
I phoned 'open and direct' this afternoon to get some 'human' advice, and found the following information very interesting...
Surprisingly, insurance for 'L' drivers is normally CHEAPER than insurance for 'R' driversbecause....when you're a Learner you have the benefit of an experienced driver beside you when driving, whilst 'R' drivers pose more of a risk 'cos they're on their own in the car.
AXA charge the same price for 'L' or 'R' drivers :T but I was quoted £1600:eek:
Granny's insurance company have quoted £461 to have my daughter put on Granny's policy .... but only until 17th July when her policy is due for renewal.
I'm not sure what we'll end up doing, but thought you might find some of this information useful in the mean time.0 -

Yikes, that's quoting £99.50 per month or "271.50 for 3 months. Scary money!0 -
YIKES  think this may be a very expensive year for us!!!
I phoned Abbey and spoke to a very nice girl in Ballymena, after taking all information she came up with Axa for £767 for fully comp in my car (small 10yr old car) with her as a learner and same rate when she passes her test. My current insurance with Allianz if only £220 fully comp, mainly because I'm a woman nearly 50 in a small old car!
So decided not to insure immediately, driving instructor says to give her a good few months to get to grips with driving before putting her on our insurance..
Oh well, better start saving!0 -

Well - I found it to be excellent value. I could not get my son on my husbands policy as car too big group 15 and automatic car.my policy was for a second car and wouldnt allow any drivers under 25.
He only needed 1 month on the provisional marmalade and he was out every day practicising in mine and got his test just after the month. we now have a new policy on my car with him as a named driver £14500 -
niceday99, I wasn't criticising you, just expressing my shock at what this insurance costs. I have 2 teenage boys and the eldest has just started to take lessons with an instructor but in my particular circumstances I couldn't afford this. Glad it worked for you. :-)0
