Have dragged and dropped everything onto the external hard drive
good good, at least that way you can see everything is backed up and accessibleIt does seem pointless, but I just wanted to know why it wouldn't to do it, and sort it out before I started doing anything like putting Windws 7 on it.

well if you fancy spending time to struggle fixing the vista backup mechanism with the intention of as soon as you get it to work it'll be wiped/thrown away along with the whole operating system and you'll then start from scratch with windows7 with a different backup system go right ahead.
I suppose there'll be some enjoyment in the challenge......0 -
