JSA when time out from uni?

Is it possible to claim JSA if I'm taking a leave of absense from university? Although it would be a leave of absense with a view to returning at some point, as far as the uni is concerned, I'm not registered as a student during this time.

Of course :) financial issues are part of the reason for the leave of absence.

  • If you've left university and will not be receiving any student loans/grants payments then you'll be able to claim JSA provided you are actively seeking work.

I thought it was a ploy to claim jsa during your summers off lol. That is a no no but yeh, if you are no longer a registered student then you will be unemployed. Thus can claim JSA.

Lol!! No :) I'm a mature student and was having financial issues on top of health issues and trying to support myself through my studies. I asked for an indefinite leave of absence, I'm just worried that the JobCentre won't accept my claim because my leave is with a view to go back at some point in the future.

I have been seeking work since I was still at uni but now obviously I don't have to fit work around anything... still don't seem to be having much success though :(

    Nah, you're fine to claim.

As long as you're not (as others have mentioned) getting student loan during this time and registered with the uni for that term, you will be fine.
