Bank Charges?

I often see people posting that they are in the process of claiming back their bank charges, and I was just wondering in what circumstances you can claim back your charges?

when the banks charge you por going overdrawn, bouncing cheques, returned DDS anything. Whenever you have been charged, you can claim back. Go to https://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk for the full lowdown
  • seriously? Because I have just been charged for 2 returned direct debits (don't know why since they were both from the same company and they haven't even shown up on my statement - just the charges have!)

I also recall that one month I was charge £100 by the bank for going overdrawn!

I'll have a look into it, thanks very much for the links! :)

No worries, reclaim those charges and feel empowered.
  • After reading all the info about bank charges, I applied to reclaim £350 of bank charges, from the halifax and horrah i have recived a letter saying they are looking into it and yesterday i got a phone call offering me back £280 of the charges.I know its not the full amount and some people are going for the whole amount back but i am very happy it will pay off my overdraft and give me £80 spare so i happy.I am going to donate 10% to our local toy library.

sweetie, i'd push for the full amount of charges. granted it'll take a wee touch longer to get the actual money but their offer is basically an admission that you are in the right so if you can be strong for a little longer you'll get the rest.

That is a really lovely gesture!

I have put in a claim for £2971 from Halifax (across two accounts over six years). They have offered £345 as a goodwill gesture which is around 12%. £280 is a much better offer but I agree with the previous post that you should insist on the full amount. After all if they charged you £30 and you offered £28, do you you think that they would be happy to accept it??!!

Well done, though - you deserve to be successful with your claim as you are obviously so caring.:T

I agree. You need to push for the full amount. If they only offer you a percentage of what they owe you then why not offer them the same percentage to settle your overdraft. Bet they won't accept it!
    [strike]-£20,000[/strike] 0!
  • The only thing about wanting to get the full amount is they do issue idle threats about stopping my bank account, which would really screw me up as i have had terrible debt problems in the past but have learn't the lesson well and am well on the way to financial stabality thank to my parents and advice from this site,so yes part of me knows they should pay all back, but also part of me says i am also in the wrong but the charges shouldn't be so high the halifax charge £39 which is crazy. But i am happy.
