Littlewood's catalogue debt- advice please?!

Hi all,

I received a letter in early 2007 from a debt collection agency for a Littlewoods catalogue debt from a previous address (I was a very badly organised student, no excuse :o) The amount was for £30 but had increased to over £100 with charges, etc. I phoned straight away and paid in full.

Anyway... In late 2008 I received a letter from a recovery group saying I still owed Littlewoods money. Since then it has been on going- I have sent several copies of my bank statement showing I paid this debt (Which they kept losing!) and was promised they would investigate. This is when they put a default on my credit file. They then passed this debt on to another agency.

I have spoken to this agency again today who have said that Littlewoods have rejected my claim that I paid the debt. They also suggested that they would offer me a settlement to pay if I want to settle it as it has been 'dragging on', and that in doing this the default would be 'lifted' from my account.

Now, I know I paid this money and my bank statement shows that I made a payment but stupidly I didn't get written confirmation from the debt collection agency. I am worried about this default (due to future career plans)- I am tempted to pay the money if this could be taken off :o
We are very short of money at the moment but I want a line drawn under this!! Is this silly?

Can they actually remove the default? Obviously they said they could but not sure if they were just trying to fob me off to get their money?

Any info would be much appreciated!!

Thanks for reading :)

Only littlewoods should be able to place a default on your account, if it was been handled by a debt group they should not have placed a default.
Further more they can only place a default within 6 months of you defaulting the account.

Rather than just a bank statement do you have any written confirmation that they wanted you to pay £100 at roughly the same time your statement was been issued?

I would get in touch with the OFT and submit a complaint over unfair placed defaults and chasing you for debts that you have already settled in full.

There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies
  • Thanks Dark Convict. Stupidly I don't have any thing in writing.

I didn't know about there being a time limit for putting a default on a credit file, thanks for that! Will be contacting them tomorrow then! :A
