How can I trace old school friends for free

I am organising a school reunion ( I left school in 74) and have contacted quite a number of the girls..but there are still a fair few missing.

Most internet sites charge to do a trace, which would work out expensive.

The people I am trying to trace were never all from the same local area as we went to boarding school... I have already found some via other girls, friends Reunited and facebook.

Can anyone suggest how to go about this for free?

Have you tried directory enquiries? If they have a slightly unusual surname it's espeically good and it's entirely possible them/their family will still be living where they were, when you were at school ..i'm guessing you knew them well enough to know where they were from?

Contacting the school direct (if you haven't already) and getting the old address from them - don't they have an alumni that the girls would have joined/kept in touch via?

have you tried using google for any unusual names or if your sure of a career path? enclose in speech marks e.g. "daska doolittle" and try the obvious variations, if nothing else it may give you some clues as to where to try next.

Try this site http://www.lostamigos.net/ it had a big spot an TV a while ago and it's totaly FREE , I've even found a few mates from 1986 on there!!

The OP left school in '74 so this makes him even older than me. There don't seem to be many people in my school year on facebook, but people 10 years younger than me will probably find lots of classmates, and people 20 years younger will probably have their entire class on FB!

If some of your boarding school pals went there because their parents were in the forces then you could try Britbrats. I think it's mostly for people who went to forces schools in Germany but many of them may have gone on to boarding school at some point http://britbrats.tripod.com/
