Is this some new natural phenomenon or are supermarkets changing the way bananas are stored ?
For the last few months every banana I buy from my local supermarket starts getting black from the inside out-before in the "olden days" they would just go spotty.

Bananas only go black from the inside out so to speak when they have been stored in a coldstore. Bananas should always be stored out of chill. One day you are the bird and the next you are the statue, but everyday you should try to do something you love0

Keep them away from other fruits, that is a good tip and keep them in a fresh place.0

I was told never to store bananas in bunches should always keep them as singles they are supposed to keep longer this way0

I noticed this winter when it got very cold (i.e. when snowing) even though we looked after the bananas properly in store they didn't last long, my theory is it just got too cold in the lorry. It shouldn't normally be a problem though, either the bananas are poor quality or they are being held in store for too long (loose normally have a 2 day life in store) or they are putting them in the fridge.0

I usually go to street markets, but I got some small avocados from Morrisons and they went black from the inside before they were even ripe. I gave Morrisons the benefit of the doubt, and the next lot of avocados had to be thrown away too.
Dole bananas seem to last a long time: they are edible even when the skin is black. I prefer the taste when the skin is speckled, and can't remember when I last wasted a banana.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

"Bananas come from the Equator, don't store them in the refrigerator!"...
Have been storing bananas in the fridge since reading a tip on here to do so to prolong their life, had not had to throw any away since then, even when the skins go black.
Don't they bring them into this country in refrigerated lorries?

To experiment simply put ONE in a fruit bowl, and one in the fridge, also put one on the side away from other fruits. Interestingly bananas actually help tomatoes to ripen, the banana is so different to other fruits.
The one in the fridge will go black very quickly, but inside it will still be fine.
EHow;-- Leave bananas
in a closed paper bag at room temperature if they are not yet ripe.
- Step 2
Place an apple in the bag to speed ripening. The apple gives off ethylene gas, which causes fruit to ripen. - Step 3
Once bananas become ripe - that is, yellow in color, speckled with a bit of brown - put them in your refrigerator, preferably at a temperature of about 50F (10C). - Step 4
Store for no more than 2 weeks. - Step 5
Once cut, sprinkle with citrus juice to stop them from browning too quickly

I always make sure not to buy too many bananas as I can't stand food going to waste.0
