I always seem to have problems paying my CT, I budget for it every year and yet somehow when it's due paid there's nothing left to pay it. Like you it's the only thing I have problems paying, I was going to set up a D/D this year and again never got round to it so just waiting for a letter to come from Scott & Co who I'm already paying the last two years to.

They're really quite heartless and don't care how you're going to live without the money when you're already on a tight budget. As for your bank account details, the bank has to provide your account details when asked by any goverment authority so there's no hiding from them. I'm always worried that this will happen to me when my account is in the black, which isn't very often.

you say you do not have a direct debt with the council.....in that case the council should have no authority to take any money from your account.

phone up the bank again and explain that you have not authoritised any DD with the council and that they (the bank) are to IMMEDIATELY refund this money as you have not authorised it and that under the terms of the DD guarentee its the BANK's responsibility to reverse the transaction NOW.

the bank may say that they are operating under the AUDDIS scheme (it allows authorised companies to set up DD without your written consent) but this makes no difference to the fact that the BANK must reverse the transaction if unauthorised by you.
    phone them asap.

Clapton it won't be a direct debit it will be an arrestment, this happened to me and I didn't get any notification of it until after it had happened. The bank and the council both told me it couldn't be reversed and there was nothing I could do about it.

Yeah I'm sure Clapton's right. Phone them back and demand to speak to someone of authority and explain your situation.

Gawd, it's disgusting that they've done this to you....

    Someone's gotta help

I also think you should go a bit further than that afterwards and send the bank a written complaint asking for compensation of a specified amount. Any suggestions folks how much she should ask for? They are at fault for paying out unauthorised funds.

It might be an arrestment but its also an infringement of human rights. How dare they go into your bank account.
