Recommendations for tax return

Its only taken a year for my OH to get all the stuff together needed to submit a tax return for 08/09 as he started off the tax year unemployed and then was on quite a high tax code WK 1 was next to it.

Anyway cos he's got quite a bit of different forms to submit we were thinking of using a tax refund company.

Anyone used any and can recommend them? Obviously want a good service, but also one that doesn't charge you an arm/leg for the service.

Any help much appreciated as not going to submit the 08/09 until he gets a p60 for 09/10, you never know could be due a refund for that tax year as well.

I wouldnt use any firms, you can prob do it all yourself. They normally take approx 40% of any refund due. Just post the help you need and Um sure we can all help.

If you are talking about a self-assessment tax return form rather than a claim for a refund for the 2008/2009 tax year, which are 2 entirely different things, then your husband needs to get his tax return in asap. If HMRC are expecting an 08/09 tax return in then it is likely has already incurred a £100 penalty for failing to submit it by 31st January 2010

No its not a self assessment tax return. Its just a normal tax return or refund, whatever you call it here. Im a bit different in that im from Australia and its compulsory to submit a tax return each year, so because i am used to it i check and re check our P60's at the end of each tax year.

Because my OH was unemployed at the start of April 08, i had a feeling things wouldn't run smoothly when he got a job. He then had WK 1 next to his tax code when working for the company he is still with via an agency and then when the company took him on through themselves i was convinced the tax code wasn't right.

Im not sure if everything i have is straight forward you see, i have numerous P45's, thing from jobcentre. Don't know what forms he needs to fill in and where to send it all off etc to do it ourselves. If it was just a P60 i wouldn't hestiate doing it ourselves as did this a few years ago just with P60's and it was very easy and i myself got a £400 refund.

    What i have is:

    Previous job leaving date of a P45 - 06/02/08 (i know tax year 07/08)
    Tax code - 522L

    Job centre P45 - 30/07/09
    Tax code - 543L

    Job centre P60 - Year to 5th April 2008
    Tax code - 522L

Agency P45 - 21/11/08 (this is when same company took OH off agency and onto a temp contract direct with them)
    Tax code - 603L

Payslip for Week 52 - 2/4/09 (cannot find P60 for company but have this last wage for tax period)
    Tax code - 556L 1

You don't need to fill in any forms, just write a letter to his tax office asking for 08/09 to be reviewed re a possible refund of tax. Enclose his original P60's and copies of his P45's and it would also be helpful if he listed what he was doing in chronological order between 6th April 08 and 5th April 09. He has 6 years after the end of the tax year to ask for such a review.

Do exactly this. If you don't have all the P60s/P45s, then detail as much as you can remember in the letter and HMRC will check these against their copies.

You don't need to request a specific amount to be refunded - HMRC can calculate this for you. There is absolutely no need to use a tax refund company as you can do everything yourself just as easily as instructing them.

Send it to his tax office (the office his most recent employer deals with). If you aren't sure where this is, look for a "tax reference" in the format 123/AB45678 on his documentation and enter it here: http://search3.openobjects.com/kbroker/hmrc/locator/locator.jsp?type=1
