Where I work there is a market every thursday with a farmers one once a month too.
Would it be cheaper for me to get my fruit and veg from the stall there than to buy supermarket stuff?

I guess so, since these people don't pay rent at all, or if they do, then maybe very minimal only compare to those in supermarkets.0

Markets can be great, especially if there's a glut of something or if you go at the end of the day when they're really reducing stuff to get rid of it. I used to live near a great market and remember coming home with big bags of peppers and avocados that I'd paid very little for.
Farmer's markets are great but the veg does tend to be a lot more pricey and it's not always as fabulous as it's made out to be. I remember once going to a farmer's market and there was a stall that sold 'fresh' loose salad leaves which everyone was raving about. Then I noticed that when one box got a bit empty, they pulled out a couple of bags of supermarket salad, undid the bags and topped the boxes up

I live near the largest market in Europe (Leicester) and i can honestly say that everytime i've shopped there i have been given 'duff' stuff that you don't find until you get home..it also doesn't last as long as the fruit and veg from the supermarkets and the prices are not usually cheaper (they are sometimes dearer) than the supermarkets.
It is a real shame as i won't shop there now and i'm not the only one that has had the same experience with our market.0 -
We have an outdoor market nearby that's on twice a week and an indoor one a bit further away. Prices tend to be cheaper at the indoor one eg 5 pound of bananas for £1. You do have to be careful about the quality though. If you go often enough you learn which traders have the good quality produce and which sell stuff that is past it's best. The length of the queues are probably a good indication.0

Our market is really good. We try to get all our fruit & veg from there. In the 7 or so years we've been using the market, we've perhaps had 2 cucumbers that have not kept very long and one bag of pears. Apart from that, the quality of the produce has been great and lots of it is grown locally. We take our own bags, the big supermarket bags for life type, for the stall holder to pack straight into and I would say that we rarely pay more than £10 or £12 for 3 huge bags full. If they do put anything fragile into bags, these are paper, so go straight onto the compost heap, so no supermarket shrink-wrapped swedes and plastic punnets going to landfill either. The stallholders do pay council rent to be on the market but they won't have the overheads or the profits-for-shareholders-at-all-costs ethos of the big supermarkets. Hope you find a market with a good stall. Once they get to know you, they'll also flag up anything that's particularly good that day or on offer.2025's challenges: 1) To fill our 10 Savings Pots to their healthiest level ever

We regularly shop at our weekly market or the local farm shop. Far better quality and cheaper than any of the supermarkets.0
