The are not allowed to give a false referance however they are allowed to give a true referance but most companies just give a standard referance of time worked, time of ill etcAlways ask ACAS0 -
I was sacked and completely honest when saying i was sacked from my last employer, i was told by the manager interviewing me that not to tell the truth in interviews. He said HR never check for references. But anything else all i say is redundancy.0

most companys do check references though and i dont particully want to lie at a interview and get caught out when they ask for a reference from previous employer.the man came to the river and it was there.:beer:0 -

It depends on any disciplinary action taken. Don't put down your old manager's name if possible put down head a office address. Then it will just be a standard reference. Like is said any disciplinary action will be on your file though.I like my money right where I can see it - hanging in my closet.;)0 -

In that case, your new employer will likely receive a reference that states start date, end date, reason for leaving:Sacked/dismissed. No further information. If I got that for a reference from a prospective employee, i'd revoke the offer, especially if nothing had been mentioned to me about it by the employee.
It really is best to be honest about it in my opinion. If it was unfair, why wasn't it taken to a tribunal? Then nothing detrimental can be written on a reference (assuming you won - which if it was unfair, you should)

If you have a friend who's brave enough you could have him or her call up your old employer and ask for a reference. That way you'd know exactly what was being said about you and could react accordingly.0
