Temping

With the current employment situation i would suggest holding fire on plans to leave secure employment, unfortunately we are still in recession and companies are not taking people at the moment.0

It's usually more "how good is this candidate at negotiating" together with "does this candidate have any skills that we haven't specifically requested but that will be useful for us". For something advertised as £7.50 to £9, they might offer you £7.50 an hour if they want you. If you can come up with some reason they should pay you more, it's open to you to try to negotiate.
Or, if you're already employed and you've told them you're earning £8 per hour, they might offer you £8.25 to try to tempt you - they'll know there's no point offering you the job at £7.50.
Currently earning £7.50 ph, and saw a job that is '£8 depending on experience'. I have almost 1 years worth of experience. I wonder if I negotiate, would I get £8, or no matter how well I negotiate, I might still get £7.50, or maye a bit more like £7.60....:p:o0 -
Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I'll stay put for now although for the sake of my health, I can't stay in my job too much longer. I'm looking at other options so maybe I won't need to temp, and there is always supply work/marking/exam invigilation.April Grocery Challenge: £80/£64.39

I was in the same position as you a few years ago. I taught in a secondary school and hated it. I have Crohn's disease and the stress was making it worse. I kept ending up in hospital. I decided that teaching was not for me and health came first, so I left, intending to do office temping (in Lincoln, in 2006 ish).
Two weeks as an office temp and I wanted to *die*.
So reluctantly I started doing supply teaching, and the only available work was in the WORST schools ever, teaching way out of my subject range... and you know what, I loved it! It was brilliant. The schools were so grateful to have someone who was willing to turn up more than once! This led to me writing to a local PRU who happened to need supply and I ended up with a full time post there for two years. Now I'm part time in prison ed and part time as a private tutor.
I seriously thought that teaching was killing me, and I wanted to walk away and never go back to it. And I'm still here and still in it...
So explore your options, they are broader than you might realise.0 -
I have magaed to find temp work quickly, but I am not in London. I think the main is that you are very pro-active in dealing with agencies as they will not necessarily remember to call you back, and also to make the most of your experience in how it relates to admin work. eg I am sure you have done filing, writing lettters, filling in forms etc as part of your teaching work, but make sure the agency knows this.
Having said that I dont think temp work would pay anything near a teachers wage. Good luck though!0 -
Supply teaching can be even worse - unless you restrict your hours and can be very discriminating about the schools in which you work.I think I'll stay put for now although for the sake of my health, I can't stay in my job too much longer. I'm looking at other options so maybe I won't need to temp, and there is always supply work/marking/exam invigilation.
I suppose you need to consider how much notice you would have to give - aren't there times by which you have to resign if you are not returning at the start of the autumn term?
Why not try registering with a few agencies in anticipation of school holidays. There are replacements needed for people taking leave then and parents of school-age children who aren't able to work during school holidays. That would also give you more current office work experience.0
