Hey all
I've decided to take the plunge and try out a web shop with payments made via paypal.
However, I have no idea which shop builder software to use.
Is there any free/cheap solutions out there I can look at, the ones I can find online that look legit are around £500 for the software.
I have no idea how to do it myself so I need a package solution really.
I would really appreciate any input from anyone who's done/doing this at the moment.
Also I can't work out whether I need my own domain or not, where do these shops end up, on a site they choose or on my domain?

Hi, I use create.net for my shop, it's very reasonable and has all the tools you need to create your shop and integrate payment. It also has a free trial (for testing the build facility only).

    Good luck :)

Hi,if you are setting up your own onine shop you need a hosting account plus a domain name for your shop try 123 reg or 1and1 ,then you need to transfer it to your hosting account, some hosting accounts sell domain names as well but are usually a few dollars/quids more but less hassle to satrt up with. Then you could use Fantastico in your hosting account and download Cubecart,Zencart etc or if you are any good with computers download Filezilla(which you will need anyway) and use Opencart(this seems to be getting more popular) as well, its just easier with Fantastico
they all come with standard Skins for your shop free of charge but if you look around you can pick up some good ones for free.If you pick Cubecart use v3 as this free and a good way of starting off, i am doing exactly the same now and its a great way to learn and infuriating at the same time but there are plenty of forums to help.
If you dont want the hassle give me a pm and i will give you some contacts that do this for a living and have really good write ups on a different forum.

Mainly jewellery, my son makes it as a hobby and he thought it would be a good way to try and earn some money to help him out while he's studying.

why not just set up an ebay shop?
  • Ebay - nice and straightforward.

Or as it's craft based, maybe Etsy or Folksy (I think that's the UK equivalent) - they are smaller but worth it as an addition perhaps.

Melmar is correct, I back them up on Zen Cart. It's free and you can use their templates or go all out on customising if you feel confident. The tutorials are good but patchy but the forums are really helpful for newbies.

There is also an etsy/folksy alternative called misi (make it sell it) :)
The very best is sometimes what nature gives us for free.
