IE problem, I can't close page

My father has a new Dell computer that is great apart from a couple of techie issues.

The main one is that when on broadband (homecall) if he clicks in the top right hand corner to close the page, nothing happens.

If he double clicks - he gets the programme not responding warning, followed by

You chose to end the nonresponsive program, Internet Explorer and the Error send/don't send box.

Whilst this is happening the computer hasn't actually frozen. In fact he can launch a new internet page, which seems bizarre.

The other alternative is to disconnect the broadband connection and then the page closes with no problem.

It's totally frustrating either way.

We would appreciate any advice or suggestions (except get firefox-as he's had that once and prefers IE.)

Thanks everyone

    Hi devizes

I hate to admit it, I didn't realise there was an ie7. I've changed the name of the thread as I presumed his is version 6, but it's a new machine so it is possibly 7.

The thing is it has worked fine for 2 weeks and has only developed this fault today - possibly as a result of me trying to alter his Dell Network Assistant settings. I simply took the shortcut out of the strartup items. I may well inadvertantly pressed a few other insignificant!!!!!!!!!!!! buttons -oops

It always amuses me when people sweep the problem under the carpet and suggest another browser instead of trying to address the problem posted... :o

Update your anti-virus and anti-spyware software and run scans.

If that doesn't fix it, follow the Spyware/Malware sticky thread at the top of this forum.

It could possibly be because of another program. Did you start getting problems when you installed anything (even non-internet related)or after any updates.
It may be worth trying ccleaner and regseeker to clear up anything. You could always repair IE. Checks the drivers for broadband as well making sure they are up to date.
If that doesnt work then d/l the latest version of IE. remove the installed version of IE, run ccleaner and regseeker again. Reboot the machine and install IE again (WARNING you will loose all the bookmarks)
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!

Don't install beta software on your hd.

Beta software is for testing purposes only.

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions ( even if some are slightly contradictory - one man's caviar is another man's salty fish eggs etc etc)

Because the pc is my dad's I'll have to wait until tomorrow to give them a shot, but please feel free to keep them coming.

It just seems strange that it only does this error whilst connected and closes perfectly when disconnected - computers don't ya luv 'em
