75% of my wages taken in tax last week!!! any help?

Hi guys,
I hope some of you can help me
I am a full time uni student, and have worked part time at the same company for 5 years (on my days off)

This year is the first year I have gone over the tax free allowance £6475
and when I did go over this last week, I had 75% of my wages taken in tax (£85 to be exact!)!

I get paid weekly, and this week I have only been taxed £2.20 which is much more reasonable, and neither my employer or the tax people can explain why they took so much money off me last week. I was given the impression that instead of being spread out, I was taxed all at once, but why???

I have also been told by the man in the tax office, it was correct to be taxed that amount, and will not get it back. My tax code has just changed to 647L, and I am aware as soon as we get to april, I will go back to not being taxed!

I earn about 130 pounds a week, so calculating from now by April my gross pay for the year should be around £6900

will I be due any refund at all, even a couple of quid,??

Im very confused, and pretty peeved they took practically all of my money last week
leaving me just enough for my bus fare!

I would be very greatful for ANY help!

Thanks

Milly

This may be the big clue - what tax code were you on before it changed to 647L?

Over the year you would pay £85 tax on an income of £6900pa.

£130pw would see £1.10 taken off in tax.

Can you tell us, as well as the previous code, your pay and tax to date as per your latest pay slip (this is the cumulative ie total for year so far figure NOT just what you got that week.

Also have you at any point in the last year been REPAID tax through PAYE? Maybe this happened & you did not realise - and now that tax has in effect fallen due & been taken off. It can happen.

Also are you totally sure any figures you are considering are just tax and not national insurance as well?

Did your employer ask you to complete a P38s student declaration? As jimmo says this does not apply to you but some payroll depts. do use them wrongly for students in part time jobs. If one was used incorrectly your tax code should have been showing as NI though they may have used NT. When you went over the 6475 allowance if the form has been used you should have been put on OT week 1 which would have spread the tax owed evenly over the rest of the tax year, but by using 647L most of it was taken in the first week it was applied. Did your payroll dept. ask you to fill in a P46 or mention that they were completing one online?
