Waitrose Interview...Problem Though...

I got a call from my local Waitrose today that I can have an interview with them on Tuesday:eek:. My first interview for my first (hopefully) job! There is a slight problem with the application though which I didn't really take into consideration at the time. On the phone the staff member said that I could work either 14:00-22:00 on Tuesday and Wednesday or 14:00-22:00 on Saturday and Sunday.:A
As I go to a 6th form, Im finding that after choosing the Saturday + Sunday option, I won't have anytime for socialising and not doing any work! :(:(.
So does anyone know if they would be flexible with my hours when I get to the interview? Need some help to keep my social life :(

You can ask them to re arrange your hours, but if they ask why, dont say what you have said here about needing a social life, they will quickly find someone else. Go for the interview you might be lucky good luck. If they offer you the job take it.

I think you need to consider your priorities, you perhaps should get the job first then after working for them for a while then enquire about how flexible they can be.
Yes a social life is important, all work and no play is not good for anyone but at least by working you will be earning money to be able to afford a social life.

Wishing you all the best at the interview, don't ruin your chances by asking such questions at this stage
  • Thanks, I'l try to find out during the interview. Anyone have experience with them??

You can go out Friday night then have a lie in and the party will only just be getting started when you finish work on Saturday...I worked loads of supermarket shifts with teenagers and although admittedly an 8pm finish is a bit earlier it sure didn't cramp their style.

I would take the job and see what happens, shift patterns can usually be amended after a couple of months. You still have all of your holidays as well, not the 5.6 weeks the rest of us have to put up with :)

I'm sure you're already a switched on MSE fan but I had to point out to loads of my teenage colleagues that if they didn't have £35/month mobile contracts and new cars they could halve their hours!

Well done on getting an interview, I went for an interview with them last month. There were was a lot of people in my group interview that had stated different working hours on their applications, It wasn't a problem to change their hours to suit. All I can advise is to try and make out that you're flexible sometimes!:D

I'm assuming that you're going for a group interview? This was nerve racking for me, i'll give you a brief rundown of mine it might help you.

When you first get there your asked to fill in a medical and wear a name tag.

Play out a random team building game, our group's task was organising ourselves into age order, Youngest to oldest with talking.

Then they give you questions on a sheet, I remember some of them.

    Who are you?
    What have you been doing?
    Proudest moment?
Why do you want to work for Waitrose?
If you could invite anyone for dinner who would it be, and why?
Which item from the supermarket shelf would you associate with yourself and why?

Then we were paired up and asked to pick an item from the selection of products that they supplied and give 15 minutes to write a script to sell the product to them.

    Good luck at your interview.

    Thanks for this :)
Umm well I'm not entirely sure to be honest whether its a group interview or 1-1. She didn't mention anything about which one it would be. So the hours are flexible then? That would be great if they were, I hope they understand - I would put the hours in but it would be much better for me if I could do it afterschool till late!
Do you know what their shifts are?

  • I wouldnt worry about having a social life. No one goes out any more cos they can't afford it:money::money:
  • I worked at a sixth form whilst working a supermarket Job. If you need the money you have to compromise your social life. I didn't really miss out though, just joined my friends when i'd finished and caught up on a few drinks. The money was more important to me because it paid for my music tuition and music groups.

The amount of times i went out on a saturday night stayed out all night, ended up at a friends and turned up to work drunk on a sunday (the worst things are roast chickens with a hangover them make you want to vomit)

You just need to sort out your social life. Can't you meet up with your friends on a weekday?

My first job at 16 was on the tills at Tesco and I worked until 9pm Friday and then again at 8am Saturday every week - still went clubbing every Friday! Most of the part-time evening and weekend staff were students who often didn't stay long so there were always spare shifts going - wasn't hard to get a swap onto a more favourable shift.

In my twenties I might have happened to have gone to all night parties and straight to work on Saturday or Sunday. ;) On occasion I was still trashed and I have never been sacked. Obviously I wouldn't do that until you are out of your probationary period: you can take annual leave for any major social events.
