Using a solicitor - has anyone succeeded ?

As a pre April 1988 case, with the company who sold me the policy telling me they do not consider I have a case, I am looking at a £20,000 shortfall in 6 years time on an endowment set up in November 1987 of £52,500
A helpfull individual at the Financial Ombudsman Service told me the only thing I can now do is take legal advice, and perhaps pursue a claim personally. However he was not aware of any case that had been to court, let alone be successful.
Is this right ? If so, I might as well give up now.
Pre 1988 salesmen seem to be completely safe from the poor advice they gave us.
