Engagment party - do I take a gift?

Hi all :)

I am going to a friends Engagment party get together tomorrow afternoon, I don't particually know the couple that well but I am friends with the Bride.
I am unsure whether I need to take an engagment gift, or whether a Engagment card is suffice? If I do take an engagment gift, I can't take housewear as ther emmigrating to Australia in August just after their wedding so will buy there, was thinking of buying the bride a little something pretty/stylish as to be honest ive never actually met the Groom!!
Any help appreciated, would a £10 gift look stingy?

thanks

I would take a small gift.

At our engagement party everyone brought something. But we had a lot of small gifts (including 10 bottles of bubbly! Add that do the 5 bottles I got for my 21st, we're still going through it!).

The majority of people gave us money / gift card in a card. As so many people asked us what we wanted we ended up requesting debenhams. But the cash was just as wonderful, as we put it together and bought some lovely stuff for the house.

Oh and people who we are friends with (but not best friends) gave us about £10 :) So maybe stick £10 in a card?

Yes I know the bride isnt much of a drinker, but I might pop into marks and sparks today and get one of those mini bottles of pink champagne :) And possibly a couple champagne flutes, but them into a pretty bag :)

Would something like some posh chocs like from hotel chocolat or somewhere sufice too?

I would take something but don't spend to much, a bottle of bubbly, flowers, chocolate or something similar would be best, then they don't have anything to take when the move.

At our engagement party we didn't expect anyone to bring us anything, but they did! We got a load of cards, a gift voucher and several bottles of bubbly and wine. I think your idea of mini bottles of fizz and chocolates is a lovely one. :)

It's entirely up to you, OP but I wouldn't take a present. I love being generous to my friends and families, but they're having a party - your presence is your present. It's an engagement not a wedding. Save your gift for the big day.

maybe a present which does not cost much!
  • I would take what you can comfortably afford. I don't like to go anywhere empty handed if I'm being offered hospitality. I've not always been able to give much, but it's always been appreciated. (almost always...recently when I parted with an expensive(ish) bottle of M&S vino that I'd been hoarding (for us!) from a dine in deal...I was sad and fairly :o when the hostess 'joked' about it). Needless to say we won't accept another invite;)

Unless it's on a particular gift list please please dont give someone a photo frame. Lol.

We were given 10 (yes 10!) photo frames for our engagement, and as grateful as I am (some where very pretty) we just dont have the need for them!!

A friend who also recently said 'we dont want wedding gifts but if you want to give us something, you chose' got over 30 for her wedding. Lol
