Are there council tax banding changes going on?

I live in Ayrshire and yesterday arrived home to find a card on the doormat letting me know someone from AVJB(ayrshire joint valuation board) had called to inspect the premises for the purpose of council tax banding.

Firstly, are these people allowed access to my home without making an appointment or getting permission from me?

Secondly, does this mean they could decide to put the banding up for my house. Its already costing us 10% of the household income and any more really would force us out of the house.

I know that in England they are reassessing the whole banding thing and valuing homes to increase the banding but I have heard nothing of that being done in Scotland. As far as I can see they are still meant to be using 1991 values.

So why do they want to inspect my house?

We have lived here for 10 years and our current banding is,I think, based on the purchase price of the house at the time we bought it in 2000)

Check here http://www.saa.gov.uk/ and see what your neighbours are paying - maybe they've appealed? Your banding will be based on the 1991 value of your property - the price you paid doesn't come into it. Your council tax documentation from the council should explain a bit more about it.
  • Mabe they think you have done improvements and not informed them.

Have you added an extension or conservatory recently? When we did we had a couple of visits from them. We were told it would have no effect on our banding but if we were to sell the house it would be revalued.

    Hope that helps
  • Turns out I put in a request 10 years ago to get the banding checked out as my neighbours either side are both a C and we are D.I thought we should be a C too especially as one of the neighbouring houses is an identical semi attatched to ours. They have only just got round to my case.I had totally forgotten all about it.
