Tshirts still smelly after washing

Hope you can help me get my DH's gym tshirts smell fresh again!

He goes to the gym in the morning and I bung his kit in the washing machine in the evening, then hang them up to dry (normally in the conservatory as we haven't got round to getting an outside line) but they still smell sometimes. I've tried washing them twice, with extra powder and at 60 degrees but sometimes they are still really whiffy!

Any OS suggestions for stinkless tshirts?

Whenever this happens, I put my T-Shirts in the sink with some fabric softener diluted with tepid water and leave overnight.

I then pop them in for a wash and out they come smelling fresh!

I'd suggest white vinegar, soak the t'shirts in that for a wee while, paying particular attention to the armpits and then wash as normal.

I did a quick eye scan of the last post and at first I thought it said "Soak them in wee for a while" :o

Could try soaking them in a dilute of white vinegar before putting them out to dry. The smell will have vanished by the time they have dried.

    Three suggestions:
    1. Place the t-shirts in a bucket of diluted Nappysan, or any product for soaking nappies, and leave overnight before washing.
    2. Soak the t-shirts overnight in a bowl full of warm warm with a mugful of white vinegar. Transfer to washing machine. Add more white vingar to the compartment for fabric softner. Wash on 40 degree cycle. When the cycle is finished - and this is the key thing - put the machine on to another rinse cycle. Hang out to dry in the fresh air.
    3. Make a weak solution of bleach, using the instructions on the bottle. Rub the solution into the underarms and neckband. Leave for half an hour. Make another batch of the weak bleach solution in a bowl and transfer the t-shirts to the bowl. Leave overnight. Put through the washer twice - once with soap and the second cycle without soap. Hang out to dry.

  • I have had this problem too, as both my husband and I run. I find it is worse with the synthetic "brand" running/gym tops and t-shirts which are designed to wick sweat away from the body. In this type of weather we always wear thin cotton which can be boil washed, or soak in bio powder prior to washing and use vinegar in the rinse. Dry outside wherever possible.

Could you be placing too many items in the WM. If you overload there is not enough space for the water to swish around making them clean properly...just a thought:confused:

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, think I will soak in vinegar solution, make sure the machine isn't over stacked and double rinse before hanging up to dry! Think that covers everything.
