Is Skytronic & LD Systems a good make??

Hi everyone, my fiance is a Karaoke Jockey and we are looking to buy some new speakers and a Mixer. The local music shop have offered me a deal on some Skytronic QTX sound speakers 750w peak and an LD Systems LAX12DA 600w Mixer/Amp, has anyone used these Brands before as I cant find any reviews on the net and dont want to buy cheap budget/rubbish stuff, or can anyone recconmemd a good brand of speakers and mixer/amp please??

Thanks
Nath

Both these brands would be towards the budget end of the scale. I don't have much experience of LD. I have heard sone of the Citronic range from Skytronic and it isn't bad for the money, but the QTX stuff is the lowest range from a cheap brand. It doesn't sound great and the 750w peak rating is meaningless. The most powerful speaker in this range is only rated at 150w rms, 300w max, and has quite a low sensitivity which means it will not be very loud, which may or may not be an issue, depending on the size of venue.
For new gear Behringer is about a low as it is wise to go. Rather than buy new it might be worth checking out local paper / ebay / gumtree for second hand stuff. Good brands to look out for which shouldn't break the budget include Peavey, Yamaha and the aforementioned Behringer.
  • I was looking at some Behringer speakers before i went to the local music shop but they said they had heard of some that had broken down and were really expensive to get repaired. Not sure if this was just a sales technique as the only speakers they have in stock are the Skytronic QTX ones :(

    I was looking at these

This is the cheapest site i can find them on (£394 pair) and they seem to have really good reviews on other websites :j have you dealt with them at all before??

    Thanks

I have used Behringer speakers, desks, monitors and V Amp pro units as well as a lot of outboard gear as well....like Skytronic, its built to a price, but if you can't afford the top end quality (remember you buy reliability as well) the behringer would be an improvement over the Skytronic, having said that, depending on the volume/quality/projection you're after you could take alook at these....

or if you think a 12" speaker would do,

http://www.thomann.de/gb/peavey_pr_12.htm you could get a pair delivered for less than £250.00, I have a few sets of these that I would hire out for small discos and karaokes, they're lightweight and really portable and durable, as I say figure out how big a system you need and drive the speakers correctly (amp power).

I have to also say, the Behringers are bl00dy heavy to lift compared to the Peaveys.

Remember as well, you don't have to buy local, I'm in Northern ireland and I get nearly all my stuff from https://www.thomann.de in germany, depending what you order, up to £190 is £7 delivery...over that...IT'S FREE !...massive PA systems you name it...plus they usually deliver to me quicker than most of the music stores in the UK AND cheaper delivery as well!
    I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j

Those who can do, those who can't, come to me for lessons:cool:
