    Welcome to Bristle!

If you search this board, you'll find a few threads, but this is the longest and most recently updated!

What else haven't you found? It took me forever to find a supermarket the 'right' size for me ...

    Oo that's great thanks!

I'm sure there's still lots to find - I’ve not yet found any "decent" charity shops but I’m sure my persistence will pay off. I'm doing ok on the supermarket front - in fact I’m spoilt for choice on Whiteladies road!!

Now I’m just trying to find my feet a bit more and try and get out and meet people - that's something else I want to find.. things to do in Bristol that are cheap, or even better, free!

Coming from a small town it's come as a shock but I think I’m settling in ok.

Not sure what you mean by 'decent' charity shops, but if you're near Whiteladies Road try getting up to Westbuy on Trym (No. 1 bus, and probably some others!) where there is a PDSA, St Peter's Hospice x 2, Shaw Trust, Oxfam and Oxfam Bookshop. Prices vary, but it's rare for me to trawl all of them without bagging a bargain.

I think the council has a list of events on the Tourist bit of the website, and there's a load on the Voscur website too - but you might want to filter that list!

What sort of thing are you interested in? And are you working / student / other?

I agree with Savvy_Sue- the ones in Westbury arent bad :-) Have often picked up a bargain or three

Gloucester Road also has a lot of charity shops

Give us a little bit more info about the sort of things you are looking for, and between us all we should be able to come up with something

I meant to come back and mention the Gloucester Road, there are LOADS along there, and it's not too hard to get to from Whiteladies Road (train from Clifton Down to Redland or Montpelier if the walk is a problem).

Also the Cancer Research shop on Gloucester Road has a large 'homeware and furniture' section which can be very useful - last time I was in they even had a baby grand piano in the middle of the shop! :rotfl:

There aren't too many charity shops on Whiteladies Road itself, and the ones in Clifton tend to have Clifton prices! great if you have a posh wedding to go to, but both my posh wedding frocks have come from WoT!

Oh right, I’ll check those out! I've only looked in Clifton so far really and they do seem expensive. I just like a bargain, love jewellery and scarves and get lots of them from charity shops so I shall head to the areas you suggested. Cheers :)

I work full time. Boooo! I'm loving the music and comedy scene down here - it's great. I come from a small town in Herefordshire so it's a shock to have things to do! I've recently joined citysocialising, not sure what to expect but hopefully it'll get me out and about and meeting people. Just want to get in to the Bristol lifestyle now. Will be looking for a new housemate soon too so that should be fun!

Also.. Slightly off topic.. I'm looking to get away for a cheap Easter break.. Any suggestions? Preferably no more than a 3 hour (ish) drive from Bristol.

Have you thought about a 'holiday at home', if that makes sense, rather than going anywhere else. I'd get up and go and be a tourist.

Take the open top bus, hop on and off, get a ferry, go to St Nicholas Market, find all the nice cafes and so on. SS Great Britain, @Bristol one day when the weather's bad, Cathedral, Cabot Tower (even if you can't climb to the top any more), St Vincent's Cave and the Observatory on the Downs, day at the zoo, walk round the Harbourside, Arnolfini / Watershed / cinema or theatre in the evening.

Day trip to Bath as well. Sorted.

Because if you DON'T do all those touristy things now, you may never find the time!

I was also going to suggest you keep an eye on this thread, ready for the next Bristol meet!

This week's Venue has a feature on The West's Weirdest Weekends Breaks. Worth a look?

Rumour has it that there is a car boot in Portishead on May 8th in Gordano School field. There is also one in the flower show field on July 11th.
