Hi, I also want to buy a either loose diamond or diamond ring, but it seems that the UK prices are higher than those in US. Therefore I was wondering whether it was safe to buy valuable diamonds in US online shops.Any other suggestions? Thanks.

First of all get yourself a diamond education, the cost is based on cut, colour and clarity. Don't get to hung up on clarity, most diamonds have flaws and as long as it can't be seen with the naked eye you will be find. Cut, the best cut for the best sparkle is the brilliant cut, called because it has lots of little edges that the light can bounce off. Colour is quite important, on the whole most jewellers carry (h) which is quite an acceptable colour but the further up the alphabet the whiter, so g is better than h etc

If you have the ring made it works out cheaper than buying it off the shelf. Off the shelf rings have markups for, time in window, insurance etc. So basically the same diamond in the same setting can cost a couple of hundred pounds more if its already made.

I had my earrings made, 54.5cts each, g/h colour, clarity SI1/SI2, platinum settings. Same earrings from cooldiamonds were a about £900 more.

Bear in mind that once you get to about 75pts then the price jumps quite a bit. Plus if you get it mounted on a US style setting the diamonds stand out much more than on our british settings. US settings are much higher, have just had my engagement reset in the US. By the way the diamond in my ring came from Mr Ratner and it is a beautiful diamond and much remarked upon.

  • I'm not sure if anyone is interesed now, but I bought a platium diamond ring from a jewelers in the Jewelery quarter, Birmingham. Good service and a managed to get £200 knocked off.

I asked my partner last week whilst we were on holiday to marry me...and she said YES!

Now I need to look into saving money on a Wedding, but not for a while!

    Congratulations on your engagement!
What was the shop called in Birmingham? I'm popping up there myself in the next month. So any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Hey guys... can any of you tell me at what level of the 'C's the diamond actually starts to appear less than perfect? I imagine that whilst a D color and FL clarity is perfect... an E with VVS1 is going to look basically identical to all but the very best eye, would that be correct? So how far can you go? Can you go all the way to G or H and VVS2/VS1 and it still look all but perfect?

This certainly is one thing not to skimp on, but MSE still has me wanting to get the very best for the money I have!
