Cardboard

I have a lot (a lot) of cardboard boxes and other types.

I would like to recycle it but can not take it anywhere so think my only option is to burn it.

Is there any other solution?

It may be worth looking at www.recyclenow.com to see if there are any local recycle banks you're not aware of.

Otherwise, if it's useful boxes, freecycle or a local advert might find someone who would use them. Composting is also an option.

Our council tip (recycling centre) accepts cardboard, are you sure yours does not? Otherwise cardboard is really useful for mulching gardens, advertise on Freecycle or your local transition group or allotment association.

I think this is one of those cases of local councils really differing in what recycling they will collect. Our council takes cardboard. We just put it straight in the recycling wheelie bin. It is also the only item they'll collect that won't fit in your bin, so large boxes can be flattened & stacked at the side on wheelie bin day & the recycling bin lorry will take it. It does have uses on allotments, veg gardens, also for people who have worm composters....we use big sheets of cardboard in our wormery for moisture retention, rather than buying the special mats. I agree it's infuriating when there's no local outlet for such a potentially useful material.
2026's challenges: 1) To rebuild our Emergency Fund to at least £5k.
    2) To read 50 books (12/50) 3) The Re-Shrinking of Foxgloves 8.1kg/30kg
Remember....if you have to put it on a credit card, extend your overdraft or take out a loan to buy whatever it is, you probably can't afford it, as that's not your money, it's somebody else's!
  • I think that most local authority recycling centres will collect cardboard separately for recycling. My local council have told me that the problem with cardboard for doorstep collections is the high volume to weight ratio: their recycling targets are based upon weight. Of course cardboard also has a lower market value than paper.

Do you have a school/ nursery nearby? They may be able to use it for craft with the kids?

  • Can it be reused for anything?

  • Our council has started to collect it, however if you have more than they will collect your best bet is find a private recycling company who will either pick up for free or you can drop of with them. All they do is bale it up and sell it on
