Does anyone on here know how child maintenance is worked out by the CSA?

    Hi sarah

    http://www.csa.gov.uk/en/setup/

Here's a link for the CSA site - it 15% of net earnings for one child, 20% for two, not sure about 3 or 4, etc. There are also other factors to take into consideration, like other dependents living at address, nights spent with other parent, etc.

For CSA cases after March 2003, it is a straightforward 15% for one child, 20% for two children and 25% for three or more children.

If the NRP is living in a household with children, the above amounts will be disregarded before the same percentages are applied to the amount of children the NRP is paying for.

So, for example, my ex has one child in his household. The first 15% of his net income is disregarded. From the remaining amount, he pays 20% for the two children that he has with me.

If the NRP has the children for 52 nights a year, the amount can be reduced by one seventh; two sevenths for 104 nights a year.

If there are arrears, the NRP may have to pay upto 40% of his/her pay to cover the regular maintenance, plus arrears. The CSA prefer all arrears to be paid within a two year period wherever possible.

These amounts are applicable if the NRP earns more than £200 a week net. If they earn less, the formula is more complicated.

Housing costs are not taken into account. A partner's income is also not taken into account, but tax credits can be included (not sure whether it is CTC or WTC though)

I believe that if the NRP has to travel a considerable distance to work or to see the children, they can apply for a variation, to pay a lower amount of maintenance.

If the NRP is on benefits, the amount payable is normally £5 a week. I don't think DLA is taken into account.

If the NRP is a student, I don't think they have to pay anything.
