Barclays reply to token payment offer I don't understand?

We are dealing with CCCS as we are having money difficulties. I sent Barclays 3 letters, (2 loans and one for my account overdraft) containing my income and expenditure which has a £75 deficit and an offer of £1 as a token gesture as advised by CCCS.
Today I have recieved replies to one of the loans and my overdraft but I don't understand exactly what they mean. This is what they say:
"We are in receipt of the proposals from your appointed representatives ir offer in relation to the above account.
Following careful consideration of your offer, we regret to advise that this is not acceptable to us. If you have not received a Default Notice on the account, demanding full repayment of the arrears, you will shortly be issued with one.
Until such time, you should pay the amount you have offered. Providing these payments are received on a monthly basis we will refund any interest that accrues on the account from now until the account is closed and passed to the Recovery Department".
Why are they rejecting my payments but telling me to pay them at the same time?
Thanks Sarah

They are saying they cant accept the offer but if you show goodwill and pay what you said you will pay then they will refund any interest as goodwill on their part
your next contact will probably be from mercers , their in house collectors...
I would advise you open a bank account with someone you dont owe money to (if you havent already) and have any wages/benefits paid in to that from now on...0 -
Think they are saying that they'll accept your payment but will default you for it. However to the best of my knowledge if they took you too court your actions would be seen favourably by the judge.0

Hi Sarah
The default notice is a legal step they go through. This means they can register a default on your credit file (which almost always happens on a DMP).
Even when a creditor says they won't accept your offer, you must always continue to pay them.
And actually they are agreeing to freeze interest so they are sort of accepting unofficially.
Its not bad news, though they have worded it as though it were.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -

They are rejecting your proposal as a long - term solution. They want your one pound (your "gesture of goodwill") as a sign that you are going to do what you say.
What they are going to do is issue a formal DEFAULT NOTICE. It just put's down in legalese the fact that you have not stuck to the terms conditions & that you are in breach of contact. Barclays (usually) stop all charges & interest at this point so it is a good thing.
Deep breath & relax!

Do you know how much CCCS have offered as a payment and what the balance is?
Don't want to worry you but Barclays are murder. They also seem to be a bunch of muppets though. As everyone else on here says though, you can't pay what you haven't got; it just seems to take them a long time to acknowledge this.

Thanks everyone for explaining it in plain english. I'm sure they write these things specifically so you don't understand what they're on about! I still haven't heard from the other barclays loan yet although I sent all the letters on the same day.0
