Job references

I've just secured a position with a company after being self-employed for about 2 years before which, I had a similar position to my new role.

They want 2 references with one from my most recent employer but the director who was my boss is now with another company. Can it still be him?

As your new company whether they would prefer that or one from the HR department.

My only issue is that all HR could do is confirm the dates of my employment which isn't really a reference.

I would give your new company both contact details, for HR and for the old boss and let them decide what they want to use.

isnt that what most companies do these days, i know my last employer i was told to forward any references to personel rather than ask a certain person for a reference

    That is a reference.

Lots of companies now only give those sort of references out to avoid being sued.
