over the past few years i recieved letters from mackenzie hall who say i owe over 7000 to lowell portfolio 1 limited. i phoned them last year and was really worried about the amount even tho i didnt know who the debt was with, anyhow last march i set up a direct debit to pay them 25 pounds a month till the year 2034. when i spoke to them i asked for a copy of the original agreement and as i have still not recieved it after a year i decided to stop the direct debit. 2 weeks after doing so i recieved a letter from them, a reduced settlement offer of 5700. but i noticed the original amount even tho i have been paying them for a year is still the same amount. i dont know who the debt is with but i am really worried cos i am expecting a baby and i have these letters keep coming in saying they want payment. i really dont know what to do ..please help.

Have you checked your credit files - to see if they inidicate any sources of this alleged debt?
I believe (someone will correct me if I'm wrong) that you can still send the 'prove it' letter that's floating about somewhere - that basically says you have no knowledge of this debt and until they provide you with the details then you aren't going to pay it.
Also you may be able to tell them to get lost as you asked them for a copy of the original credit agreement and they have failed to provide one so the account is in dispute.
Basically there are several different avenues you can go down to get this issue resolved. I don't know enough about them to advise you on them but just to reassure you that you don't need to panic, and that no doubt some of the experts will be along to help a bit later on.
Good Luck with sorting it all out.
Oh and congratulations as well!

Some companies are well known for buying up debts and trying to chase people with similar names etc in the hope that someone somewhere will be scared and pay up so it may not even be your debt anyway.
Anyway - there is lots of help available so I'm sure someone can help.
10Past6, Ras and NeverInDoubt are all experts so if you don't get any replies later don't be afraid to 'bump' your thread (ie just post something to get it noticed again - like 'anyone help') or you could tryand PM one of the 3 people I have suggested.
Good Luck
