Hi
we are struggling finacially and consequently have written to all our credit cards and offered token payments of £1 as that is all we can afford at the moment.
All but one...yes Barclaycard....have not accepted the token payment. The reply to our 1st letter with token payment, was to claim on the redundancy insurance we have on the card....but as clearly stated in our letter we are not unemployed, although a bout of unemployment last year put us in this situation. We wrote back attaching again our budget sheet, copy of 1st letter and token payment along with new letter stating we are not unemployed so cannot claim on said insurance.
Whilst checking banking online I notice on Friday they have taken £158 out of the Barclays current account to pay the arrears. A letter has arrived today. They say this is "legal"
My question is "is it????"
All other creditors have taken up our offers and are freezing interest. Most have said we are on a hardship scheme. Barclaycard was called on Friday to confirm this transaction and during this conversation it was claimed that they had not recieved our letters, but they ARE cashing the cheques!
Help please from someone who has gone through this....is there anything that can be done, or is this a sit and swallow situation?
Any advice greatly appreciated

Yes it is , its called offsetting
You need to switch to a bank you dont owe , and sharpish or they will help themselves0 -
You need to sort out a new account straight away and move your incoe /benefits etc.
Do you have an overdraft at barclays? they may well cancel your overdraft now they know you are in financial difficulties, which could swallow up all your income for the month.
Go for a basic bank account as these don't require a credit check.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Yes, offsetting is perfectly legal, check your T&C's. As everyone has said switch to another account and quick. The Co-Op Cashminder account is a quick one to set up and has a debit card but no overdraft or cheque book0

hi
i agree with op you need to sort out a new bank account, but have to add do you still pay insurance on the card? as i would probably look at canceling this, as you cant afford to pay it if your paying token payments0 -
OK...
Just applied online for basic account with Natwest. Awaiting paperwork to get the ball rolling
thanks all again!!!0 -
