De-registering as self employed
slig
Hi. I registered as self employed to do mystery shopping. I no longer do this and I am moving abroad for a year in the summer, so I want to de-register as self employed. I realise the end of the tax years is very fast approaching and so this is quite urgent as I don't want to have to fill out the tax return while I am abroad.
I have looked on the HMRC website but I haven't found the answer yet, so I thought I'd post on here while I continue to look, in case someone knows the answer.
Thanks x

Well, 3 years later and I am still getting the bleeding forms through. Had a £100 late payment fine this year too. Have been told to ignore it twice by different people over the phone - although how wise this is I do not know.I go round in circles with them ,letters,e-mails and hours holding on the phone- 3 years now.
So, if you do manage to do it, please tell me how!!!!!!0 -
cant you just fill them but put zero earned for the self employed section? I know it's not deregistering but atleast you wont get a fine0

You will need to enter the date you stopped being self-employed on your tax return0

1) Phone National Insurance office and arrange to stop making Class 2 payments.
2) Complete your tax return as soon as possible after it has been issued. Make sure you complete the box on the Self Employment section that asks if you have ceased self employment before 05/04/2010.
DO NOT leave completing your tax return till Jan 31 2011 as your return WONT be looked at and reviewed in time to be able to take you out of the selection process for the following tax years return.
Make sure you DO phone the tax office and inform them of your new address when you move, this will ensure that should you slip through the net and be issued with a return in error,it actually gets to you and you don't end upwith a shock bill (Penalties, and intrest) on your hands in 3-4 years time when HMRC finally traces your correct address.[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

And herein lies the lesson. Don't ever tell them in the first place. Same as VAT reg if under the VAT limit for your company. It seems like a good idea but it isn't.0
