Brass Jam kettle

I mentioned to my MIL that I was on the look out for a jam kettle and she told me that she had rescued one from her mums house and I could have it. She brought it round for me yesterday and it's made of brass. I've never seen a brass pan before so my question is, is it safe to cook jam in it? It's probably a really simple question but I'm not sure I like the thought of cooking anything in a brass pan.

I don't see why not - if it's an antique one then it must have been used in the past. I think the only metal you shouldn't use for making jam (or maybe it was chutney) is aluminium.

I have my MIL's old brass one which had been her mums before - fantastic for jam and marmalade!

Give it a good scrub with a brillo pad, it'll be fine.

Thanks. It's definitely an antique. It's really heavy and it looks like the MIL had used it as plant pot holder. I'll clean it up and try it for a batch of onion marmalade (MIL's payment)
