age limits for child support

Can someone point me in the right direction to find out how long child support is payable for. My son is 16 next month and ex has just told me that he won't be paying from now on. We've had a private arrangement until now - not that i was happy with it but in theory it stopped any hassle for my son.
My son won't have left school until end of June. He doesn't know what he will be doing education/job wise after that but may be trying to get on an apprenticeship scheme. If this is the case, do I have a case to put forward to the csa to try and continue with child support or will son be earning money and no longer entitled to child benefit and child support?

As long as the child qualifies for child benefit then maintenance is payable which could be up to 19 if the child goes into further eductation but not advanced (uni) .This is a brief summary of the situation other posters will be able to elaborate more as im not in that situation just yet .

My daughter stayed in sixth form and my ex had to pay CM until the first Monday of September following her leaving sixth form (that's when CB stops). She had turned 18 in May of that year. He had to continue to pay the arrears that were due.

I think the simple answer is that, if you believe he's serious, you tell him you'll contact the CSA straight away. If he doesn't like it then he has the option to ask you to continue with the private arrangement or take his chances. What do you have to lose? Your son is nearly 16 so presumably mature enough to understand that his dad is throwing his toys out of the pram if he causes 'hassle' for him.

My daughter is now 18 and at University but her Dad still pays maintance directly to her now. Without this money I dont know how she would manage as she's not intitled to any grants. If possible try your best to keep the maintance a private agreement between you both than the CSA.
