Brown Rice in a Steamer??!

Options
I tried it last night.. 50mins later and still not cooked! Now I've not got any instrucstions with the steam so put the rice in the special rice pot, put the steam on. Realised after 25mins that the rice wasn't cooking so done a quick google and it said to remove the drip tray.. so done that.. 25mins still not cooked! Gave up as I was starving and had curry with pasta!!

Can anyone tell me how you cook rice in a steamer??

Thanks!

    Hi

I think when you cook rice in the steamer you're supposed to add water to the rice. Can't remember exactly how much, but think it might be half as much as you would use to boil.

Why not just do it in the microwave. Use almost twice as much boiling water as rice. Season and cook for 13 minutes for basmati and approx 18 to 20 minutes for brown. If using easy cook rice add less water.

I do rice in my steamer all the time. best way of cooking it if you ask me.
Once you get the hang of it, you'll never look back!

Put the rice into the rice bowl for the steamer... add enough water to cover it (and a little extra).
Add salt and/or herbs too if you fancy something a little different

Then put the rice bowl into the steamer shelf, cover, and turn on.

White rice usually takes about 25 minutes, brown rice about 35 minutes.

    Hope that helps.

I have had a steamer for ages and it was only last night I tried to cook rice in it. I was doing some veggies as well so I thought why not. It was lovely, and best of all, no hassle. I just left it to do the work and didn't even look at it until the timer went ding.

I used 250ml of easy cook rice and 300 ml of water. My book didn't specify so I used boiling water to give it a head start. I put it on for 20 mins initially but it wasn't quite ready so I left it another few minutes whilst I was dealing with something else so it was probably 25 mins in total. Rice was fluffy and grains were separate.

I usually use my microwave for rice but I love my steamer, it will cook a whole meal in one go, just add different baskets at the right time and away you go.
