The Lib Dems would not support a government which tried to make major spending cuts in the next financial year, leader Nick Clegg has said.

Slashing spending so early in the recovery would be "economic masochism", Mr Clegg told BBC Radio 4's Today.

And in other news, little Georgy Osborne was overheard saying.....

So a vote for the Lib Dems is a vote for five more years of Gordon Brown?

Low growth makes the deficit worse. No matter what cuts you make.

That Clegg needs to make his mind up. Last september he wanted tocut hard and savage, including child benefit. I wonder what has changed.

I should imagine child benefit for those on mega salaries is still on the agenda.

Cable says the Tories have not announced any plans. Also what are savage cuts? Cable the other day said that if the Tories were planning to cut 2B it not really a problem but if they are talking about 20B then its a different thing.

Also is Cable the man the Bulls really want in view of hes been talking about the housing market being over inflated since at least 2004.

Personally he seems to know what hes talking about and in a hung parliament he may get a big say in the economy maybe george would be happy to give way to him.
  • Wonder whether any bookies are offering a price on Vince Cable being the next Chancellor? I wouldn't mind a tenner on that...

The next govt will have to make sensible, deep (ish) cuts while not stifling growth. I would have thought £5-10bn pa rather than either £2bn or £20bn is more sensible.

The danger of a Lab/Lib Dem coalition is (clearly!) that the debt won't be cut drastically enough, undermining sterling and leading to dramatically higher interest rates. But if the Tories cut too much, too soon, it could be a lot worse...

Low growth makes the deficit worse. No matter what cuts you make.

The deficit is down to income and spending. Growth will generally increase income through increased tax take and spending will fall as less benefits are paid.
So - Low growth won't make the deficit worse, it just makes it more difficult compared to higher growth. :j
