I know this is going to sound harsh but does your wife HAVE to stay off work till September?

Your son's first birthday and Christmas is a long way off at the moment so don't even think about it yet. He will have loads of stuff from friends/family anyway, I would be inclined at the time (if you are still in financial difficulties) to do something special for him rather than costly. He's not going to know what you "buy" for him but you could do something real special like buy small trinket type things like the "Baby's First Christmas" bauble for the tree, a few newspapers and write him a letter saying how he's changed your life and what he means to you, take a nice photograph of him and keep them in a box in the loft. Give it to him on his 18th birthday and it will mean more to him than you would ever imagine.

    Good luck

Thanks, Whilst she does not have to stay off till september, we are still assessing the costings of everything including her going back early, what with the cost of child minding and us having problems getting him into anywhere local we are assessing every option at the moment, including her putting in as much as she can into the business's affiliate operations to allow us to expand that form of income.

As for his christmas and birthday presents, we havent budgetted anything for it as we will spend what we can afford to at that point of time. The budget is simply for Nephews and nieces birthdays and christmas presents.
