Getting off the spending treadmill

I have found these couple of web pages and thought they might bring up some interesting thoughts and ideas amongst you all.

here/ a woman wore the same brown dress for a year. She did wash it before any one ask.

And getting off the spending treadmill here

Link to the little brown dress is there as well.

I have not read all of her journal/blog what ever you want to call it. But will take a indepth look tomorrow as I need to go bed now.

Take it easier.

last night on Spendaholics they made the lady wear the same skirt for a week at work (she kept getting carried away with having to have new stuff). Her colleagues kept commenting how nice she looked as she accessorized/wore different combinations of her huge wardrobe.

i've got a sewing machine but don't seem to have the time at the moment, but have 3 different suiting material (bought for £10 from eBay) and plan to make myself 3 trouser suits with skirts for the winter as i can't afford to buy new ones (old ones are threadbare!).

Last summer I made all my summer skirts out of the remenants box at the material shop so cost me £1.50 each!

Just want to echo Iriahm's post about looking good and not having to spend a lot. It is sometimes said that people tend to buy labels because they think they are buying "style". However, if you think about it, say, a handbag without a label or any sort of branding on it is, really, just a handbag. It can be a very stylish handbag in its own right. It is the inherent quality of the item that counts.

Being able to accessorise and vary one's "capsule" wardrobe artfully is a marvellous skill. Even better if you can mix and match inexpensive (and expensive) things to maximum effect!
  • This is an interesting thread- great links by the way- I've been worried lately about what my colleagues might be thinking because I always wear the same things to work (my limited work wardrobe consists of 3 shirts, 2 pairs of trousers and one skirt) but reading the brown dress article made me realise that its likely no-one has even noticed- I thought about it and realised I never clock how often my colleagues wear certain items, so why would they do it to me!
    Thanks for the thoughts!
