IBS hypnotherapy

Options
Hi,

Does anyone have any experience of hypnotherapy for IBS?

There are some local hypnotherapists in my area but they are pretty expensive. Now, I know you get what you pay for, but I found this site http://www.hypnosisdownloads.com/downloads/health/irritable-bowel-syndrome.html offering a hypnotherapy MP3 for only $12.95. Another site sells a similar thing for $80 http://www.helpforibs.com/hypnosis/

I don't know what the technical aspects are for MP3s and hypnotherapy (I recall there being some discussion that the compression potenentially loses the subliminal aspects of the audio) but I can't honestly say I expect much for around £6... still it would be considerably cheaper than sessions with a hypnotherapist!!

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

There's a hypnosis cd for £3 on ebay.
I can't post the link but you could type in: HYPNOSIS SESSION ON CD - IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME
I personally like InnerTalk cds, they''ve helped me with a variety of things from weight loss to nail biting but they're about £22 new.
  • Hiya,

Im currently having hypnotherapy for my severe IBS on the NHS in a London hospital, it had a 3-5 month waiting list though. Whereabouts are you based? I did look at getting it privately but it was about £250+ :O

They say it has an 85% success rate :)

good luck if you do go for it!!
  • Well, for £3 it's worth a punt!

We're in the Midlands, the doctors have basically got to the point where they see the problem as a waste of time, they've never offered hypnotherapy on the NHS etc but it is quite debilitating.

This might sound strange but have you considered colonic irrigation (or hydrotherapy)? Costs about £75 for an hour session in London. My friend has IBS and says this has helped her.....I'm a believer in trying different things and not relying on prescription drugs!

As a hypnotherapist myself I would say that yes it can help with IBS and there have been some impressive results from proper clinical trials. Other causes of the pain need to have been ruled out first though - any good therapist will want to know that before they start treatment.

If you do decide to see a professional it's important to know that, unfortunately, getting some kind of qualification in this kind of therapy can be quite easy. And a qualification doesn't necessarily mean anything. Look for an accredited body and check that the therapist is actually a current member. The NCH www.hypnotherapists.org.uk is one such body.

If I were you I would try the CD/MP3 option first and see how you get on. Think of it this way, it'll either work or it won't - if it works, great, you're sorted for three pounds. If it doesn't then you can look at the more expensive options of personal treatments. On the MP3 compression issue - forget it, it will have no effect on normally recorded hypnotic suggestions.

I hope you get some relief soon.
