Exactly, you are still one month closer to being MF, ie 35yrs-1month!! It took me until my first statement (12months) to realise how much difference I could make (by OPing £100). Mine comes out with my usual payment and I didn't notice it last month as I just live off what's left after all my DDs have come out. That means I must have been wasting it before...eeek!
Good luck0 -
Don't worry too much about being short this month. You have probably been buying all those little things you forget about when you move into a new place.
I give myself a cash budget every week, for food, going out, buying clothes etc. Take it out of the bank on the same day each week and pay for everything in cash. The key thing that helps me is to write down everything I spend in a money diary. It makes me feel guilty for spending money on things I don't really need, and it didn't take long before I had cash left over at the end of the week. I save it up and spend it on myself but you do anything with it...OPs might give you a feel good factor.Lil

Firstly, congratulations on getting your own place.
For most people the first year or so is a struggle but it's worthwhile.
I'd also mention using a good mortgage overpayment calculator to see how even a little can make a big difference.
At that interest rate at least you can focus on overpayments without wondering if you can get a better rate in a savings account. Though of course, as mentioned, still having emergency savings put by.
